It's never too early to plan and prepare for wildfire. Preparing your home now is the best way to protect it if a wildfire comes your way in the future. Here are some tips for preparing this fall:

• Keep leaves and needles off your roof and deck & porch. Clean gutters of leaves and pine needles regularly.

• Keep the immediate zone (0-5 feet) from the home clear and clean of all combustible materials.

• Clear dead vegetation and debris from decks & porches as well as any accumulation underneath. Do not store anything flammable on or under your deck & porch.

• Ensure your home has legible and clearly marked street names & numbers. Driveways should be at least 12 feet wide to allow for emergency vehicle access.

• Store firewood at least 30 feet from your home.

• Trim back branches that overhang the home, deck, & porch. Prune large trees from the ground up to 6-10 feet.

• Conduct an annual insurance policy check-up. Update your home inventory and take photographs of your home, valuables, furniture, vehicles, other buildings on your property, etc. in case you are impacted by a fire.

• Develop, discuss, and practice an emergency action plan with everyone in your home. Know two ways out of your home (and neighborhood, if possible) and have a pre-determined meeting place.
