I would like to address a Facebook post made by the Truth or Consequences police chief. He is accusing the Socorro Sheriff's office of taking a homeless woman to their jurisdiction because we didn't want to deal with her. The Socorro Sheriff's Office does not, and will not, transport troubled people outside of our county just to pass on the burden to another jurisdiction. The entire incident was captured on video. It started when deputies where dispatched to I-25 just outside the City of Socorro for a homeless woman calling for assistance. Deputies made contact with her and she requested a ride to T or C. Deputies told her that they couldn't take her to T or C but offered to buy her a meal and take her to a shelter in Socorro. She refused to go back into Socorro because she said didn't feel safe. Several more times Deputies tried to get her to go to the city shelter for the night and she refused and insisted on being given a ride to T or C. Because of the impending storm, the supervisor on scene made the decision that, for the woman's safety, they had to do something. He requested my permission to to take her to T or C as per her request. Because of the circumstances I allowed a deputy to take her to the Motel 6 in T or C as she requested. Upon arriving at the T or C Motel 6, the deputy was approached by the Truth or Consequences police chief and two other officers. The deputy explained the situation to the police chief and the other officers. The police chief responded to the deputy by cussing at him and telling him to extend a vulgar message to me. Again, this entire situation is on video. The police chief then put a post on his personal FB account. His post did not represent the full or truthful story of what occurred. I hope this clears up any questions.

Socorro County Sheriff’s Office received a call for service in the Veguita area yesterday. The address the Deputies were given was the incorrect address. Our office diligently worked to find the person involved in the incident. NMSP dispatch was able to get a ping on the phone that was used and the address was in Valencia county. The information was then relayed to Valencia county.

Thank you to the residents in the area for the assistance in trying to locate the address and the persons involved.
