The Somerset Fire Department, Office of the Fire Marshal, would like to remind our local businesses and residents of some basic fire extinguisher inspection and maintenance practices.
Here are a few important reminders:
Check Monthly: Make sure your extinguisher is in its designated location, easily accessible, and free from visible damage. Check the pressure gauge, if equipped, to ensure it is within the operable range.
Keep It Accessible: Fire extinguishers should never be blocked by furniture, merchandise, equipment, or other stored items.
Check for Damage: Look for corrosion, leaks, a damaged hose or nozzle, a missing tamper seal, or other visible signs of damage.
Schedule Annual Maintenance: Portable fire extinguishers require maintenance at intervals established by applicable standards. Have required maintenance performed by qualified personnel.
Know When Testing Is Due: Depending on the extinguisher type, internal maintenance and hydrostatic testing may be required at specific intervals.
After Use, Have It Serviced: Even if an extinguisher has only been partially discharged, it should be properly recharged or serviced before being returned to service.
Remember: A fire extinguisher is only useful if it is accessible, properly maintained, and ready to operate when needed.
For additional guidance, consult OSHA requirements and NFPA 10, Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers.
