Butler Historical Preservation Society

The Butler Historical Preservation Society is an organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of Butler, NY. We are a non-profit 501 c3 organization and all donations are tax-deductible. The Society received its provisional charter from New York State in 2003. The main focus of the Society since then has been the restoration of the Butler Church Museum building and the Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse. Butler Church Museum

Built in 1836 by the Methodist Episcopal Congregation, this is the oldest known Methodist Church in Wayne County, NY. The church operated continually until the 1960's when declining membership and funds forced its closure. The church, now home to the Butler Church Museum, is on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places. Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse

The Roe Cobblestone Schoolhouse is a historic one room school located in Butler, NY. Built by Daniel Roe in the 1820's, it is believed to be the oldest cobblestone schoolhouse in North America. The schoolhouse is on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Places.

In BBB #41, we prepare for Halloween in Butler. Do you recall any particular hijinks that took place in town? Share them out! I only recall the various smashed pumpkins down around the 4 corners in S. Butler although I did hear a rumor about unknown people placing a wagon on top of one of the buildings in town...any confirmation?

In other news, I will be heading to Peterboro this weekend to participate in the induction of Samuel Ringgold Ward to the National Abolition Hall of Fame & Museum. Excited to share some Butler history with folks!

Saturday, October 17, 2026 is TOMORROW!!

Our fantastic line-up of Jubilee exhibitors are looking forward to chatting with YOU tomorrow about their area of history and/or heritage interests and expertise. The folks gathered for this day are interested in hearing your stories, too.

Metal detection history detectives, gravestone and cemetery preservationists, bee keeping advocates, apple peeling pros, family history keepers, military history spokespeople, museum directors, history re-enactors, and local historians preserving your town's interest are just a sampling of those to visit with tomorrow!

Experience the past and the present, and build some personal and community inspiration for the future during the Old Wolcott Community Heritage Jubilee tomorrow at North Rose-Wolcott High School from 10 am to 3 pm.

Remember - this historic event is the final Bicentennial Old Wolcott (Butler, Huron, Rose, and Wolcott) event for this commemorative year!! Come celebrate! Bring you family! Bring a friend! Bring a neighbor!

Nothing would make we historians and historical society members of Old Wolcott happier than to see YOU - the Butler, Huron, Rose, and Wolcott community members - at North Rose-Wolcott High School for the Old Wolcott Community Heritage Jubilee this Saturday, October 17, 2026 between 10 am and 3 pm!! We will be on hand, along with the following exhibitors to share lots of local history with you. This group of exhibitors are dedicated history enthusiasts. When you visit with them, you will walk away an enthusiast, too, and might find your self with a new interest or hobby!!

This is our final Old Wolcott Bicentennial event in celebration of our four towns' 200 years since Butler, Rose and Huron were set off from our parent town - Wolcott! It is fitting this closing celebration is at NRW High School, as it was that merger of the two school districts, North Rose and Wolcott, that steered the four town back together in support of all our children.

BBB #39 doesn't seem historical (it's only 29 years ago...) but it's a snapshot of life around October 9th, 1997, which becomes history down the line. Carol Reed was an important contributor to recording our local history. I thank her family, once again, for sharing her scrapbooks for my scanning project as town historian.
