UNPLUG CHARGERS WHEN NOT IN USE

Leaving a charger plugged in may seem harmless, but damaged, defective, counterfeit, or poorly made chargers can overheat or develop electrical faults that may lead to a fire.

A few simple habits can reduce the risk:

* 🔌 Unplug chargers when you’re finished using them, especially before leaving home for long periods.
* 📱 Use the charger recommended or approved by the device manufacturer.
* ⚠️ Stop using chargers with frayed cables, loose plugs, exposed wires, discoloration, or signs of overheating.
* 🛏️ Never charge devices on beds, pillows, sofas, or underneath clothing where heat can build up.
* 🔥 If a charger or outlet becomes unusually hot, smells like burning plastic, sparks, or makes unusual sounds, stop using it and have the equipment or outlet checked.
* 🚫 Avoid overloading outlets and extension cords.

Remember: Simply being plugged in does not mean a good-quality charger will automatically catch fire. The greater concern is faulty equipment, damaged wiring, overheating, poor-quality products, and improper charging practices.

Small electrical safety habits can prevent a small fault from becoming a house fire. 🔥🚒

🔥 Does your family have a home fire escape plan? 🏠🚒

A house fire can become dangerous in just minutes. When smoke, heat, and flames are spreading, there may not be time to figure out what to do—you need a plan before an emergency happens.

Having a fire escape plan helps everyone in your home know:

🚪 Two ways out: Identify two exits from every bedroom or sleeping area whenever possible.

📍 A meeting place: Choose a safe meeting location outside, such as a neighbor’s driveway or designated landmark. Everyone should go there after escaping.

🔥 Stay low and get out: Smoke can make it difficult to see and breathe. If you encounter smoke, stay low and use your safest exit.

🚫 Never go back inside: Once you are outside, stay outside. Never re-enter a burning home to retrieve belongings or rescue someone.

🛏️ Bedrooms matter: Make sure everyone can open bedroom windows and doors and knows how to escape from their sleeping area.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Practice your plan: Children, older adults, and anyone who may need assistance should know exactly what to do. Practice your escape plan regularly so it becomes familiar.

📞 Call 911 from outside: Once safely outside, call 911 and provide the address and information about anyone who may still be inside.

The time to make a fire escape plan is BEFORE the fire.

Take a few minutes today to draw your home's floor plan, identify two ways out of each sleeping area, choose your meeting place, and practice your escape plan with your family.
