⏰Reminder: clocks go back one hour tonight.

Before bed, set any clocks that don’t update automatically and take a few minutes to check your smoke alarms.

• Test every smoke alarm using the test button.
• Check the manufacture date. Smoke alarms generally need to be replaced after 10 years.
• Replace batteries according to the manufacturer’s instructions. For sealed-battery alarms, replace the entire unit when required.

The time change is a helpful reminder, but smoke alarms should be tested every month.

With Halloween coming up, please keep a few safety reminders in mind.

If you’re heading out for trick-or-treating, bring a flashlight or wear reflective items. Make sure costumes allow children to see clearly and walk without tripping. Use sidewalks where available and cross at intersections.

Drivers, please slow down and watch for children, especially near parked cars and along roads without sidewalks. Put your phone away and give everyone extra room.

Have a safe and fun Halloween!🎃 👻

With cooler weather here, it’s a good time for a reminder about space heaters.

• Keep heaters at least 3 feet from furniture, curtains, bedding, and anything else that can burn.
• Plug them directly into a wall outlet—never an extension cord or power strip.
• Turn them off before leaving the room or going to bed.

Before using yours, check the cord for damage and make sure the area around it is clear.

⚠️ Severe Thunderstorm Watch Until 8 PM Friday, October 16

North Coventry is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 8 PM, with storms expected to move through our area approximately 5–7 PM.

🌩️ Damaging winds are the main concern, though a brief tornado cannot be ruled out. A watch means conditions are favorable for severe storms. Make sure you can receive warnings and be ready to head indoors.

💨 Winds will increase behind the storms, ease slightly overnight, then pick up again late Saturday morning through Saturday night. Gusts of 30–40 mph are possible.

🎃 If you haven’t already, secure your Halloween decorations and bring in your trash cans before storms arrive. Nobody wants to be chasing either down the road!

🌳 With the ground already saturated, strong winds could bring down trees and power lines. Stay clear of downed wires and never drive around barricades. A road may be closed for a hazard you can’t see.

Keep your devices charged, and if you have plans this evening, keep an eye on the weather and have a place to shelter.

Don’t wait until the power goes out to check your supplies.

Keep flashlights and extra batteries somewhere easy to find, have a charged power bank for your phone, and keep drinking water on hand.

If anyone in your household relies on powered medical equipment, make sure you have a backup plan.

Check what you already have and replace anything that’s missing or no longer works.

For Fire Prevention Week, take a minute to check how you’re charging devices at home.

• Use the charger recommended by the manufacturer.
• Charge on a hard, flat surface, away from anything that can burn.
• Don’t charge devices on beds, couches, or under pillows.
• Stop using batteries or chargers that are damaged.

These reminders apply to phones, tablets, rechargeable tools, and other battery-powered devices.
