100% volunteer since 1938. Protecting the Lewisboro hamlets of Cross River, Waccabuc and South Salem

For 75 years now, the members of the South Salem FD have been serving their district in Lewisboro in many ways. Most obvious, protecting those when needed against fire, car accidents, and other various tasks. But prevention is the first method of fighting, so the members are also dedicated to educating the town, from toddlers to seniors, on fire prevention in all aspects of your life. The department knows how to have a good time as well though, having monthly members breakfasts, a family picnic, and of course the annual parade and carnival. If you have any interest in joining, please stop by the firehouse on any Monday evening between 7:30 and 9:00PM, or email [email protected]. Great way to give back to your own community, meet some great people, and have a good time.

Over the past six months, the South Salem Fire Department in partnership with our fire district, has worked to build a new and improved roof operations training prop to replace our old and outdated prop. This new prop was put into service last night with our first roof ops drill of the season. Members practiced roof ventilation techniques based on established SOPs and safety practices, which are vital to fire ground operations. We thank the dedication and support of the department, the members that took part in organizing this project as well as the board of fire commissioners for working with us to move the project to completion.

9:00AM UPDATE: NYSEG is not answering their emergency telephone lines for our dispatch center, so we had to drive around and flag down their crews to notify them of additional power line emergencies. Thank you for everyone’s patience.

The Department is currently operating at multiple alarms at the moment including this one involving live power lines down and burning on Dogwood Lane. Residents are reminded not to go near any downed lines whether or not you believe they are live or not. There are currently multiple road closures throughout our District including Mead Street, Route 35 and Route 123.
