We provide advocacy and parent support for families that include a person with a disability.

Today, the Gateway Coalition of Service Providers brought together local legislators, candidates, service providers, families, and self-advocates for a Legislative Meet & Greet at the Developmental Disabilities Resource Board (DDRB).

The morning was an opportunity to connect, share experiences, and have meaningful conversations about the issues impacting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families throughout St. Charles County.

Thank you to Representative Colin Wellenkamp, Representative Wendy Hausman, District 105 Representative Candidate Cat Clayton, and St. Charles County Executive Candidate David Veneziano for joining us and taking the time to listen and connect with our community.

A special thank you to F.A.C.T. family Michele and Ted Wood, as well as Kara Knight, for sharing their personal stories and perspectives. Your voices are an important part of these conversations.

We also extend our appreciation to DDRB for hosting today’s event and helping bring our community together.

When people with disabilities are authentically represented in our schools, workplaces, communities and media, it helps create a world where disability is recognized as a natural part of human diversity.

Representation can challenge stereotypes, increase understanding and help people with disabilities see themselves reflected in the spaces around them. But meaningful representation goes beyond simply being included—it means making sure people with disabilities have opportunities to share their experiences, perspectives and ideas in their own voices.

Everyone deserves to be seen, heard and valued.

When it comes to advocacy, documentation can be a powerful tool.

Keeping records of meetings, emails, evaluations, service plans, concerns and important conversations can help families stay organized and prepared when advocating for their loved one.

Good documentation can help you remember what was discussed, track progress over time, identify concerns and clearly communicate what your family needs.

After meetings or conversations, consider writing down the date, who was involved, what was discussed and any next steps.

Advocacy starts with being informed—and keeping good records can help you use your voice with confidence.
