Durham Fire Department Announces the Line-of-Duty Death of Firefighter Andrew Brokes

DURHAM, N.C. - It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that the Durham Fire Department announces the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Andrew Brokes, age 24.

On Thursday, October 8, 2026, at approximately 3:15 a.m., a 911 call reported a fire at 410 Marly Dr., Durham. Firefighter Brokes was battling a structure fire and sustained fatal injuries while searching for victims inside the fire building.

Firefighter Brokes joined the Durham Fire Department in May 2025 and was assigned to Fire Station 13 on Tower Company 5. He was a dedicated public servant who served the City of Durham with honor, courage, and integrity.

"This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community," said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family's privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way."

The Durham Fire Department appreciates the assistance provided today by their fellow public safety agencies including the Durham Police Department, Durham County Fire Marshal’s Office, Durham County Emergency Medical Services, Durham County Sheriff's Office, Durham City/County Emergency Management, Emergency Chaplains, U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, To***co, Fi****ms and Explosives, City of Raleigh Fire Department, Town of Cary Fire Department, North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

This is an active and ongoing investigation, and any additional news media inquiries should be directed to NCSBI Public Information Director Chad Flowers at 919-618-1332 (mobile) or [email protected]. (RELEASED BY THE CITY OF DURHAM)

NORTH CAROLINA LODD

A Durham, North Carolina, firefighter was killed in the line of duty early Thursday morning, October 8, while battling a large structure fire in the 400 block of Marly Drive. Two additional firefighters were injured and transported to the hospital, with both expected to survive. The investigation is on-going but initial reports indicate a possible structural collapse during firefighting operations, although the exact circumstances surrounding the death have not been officially confirmed. The fallen firefighter's identity has been released, Andrew Brokes. Our condolences are with the Durham Fire Department, the fallen firefighter's family, and everyone affected by this tragedy. Rest in peace, brother.
