⛴️ Good news for our Anderson Island and Ketron Island neighbors: Ferry service has been restored!

Pierce County has confirmed that repairs to the Steilacoom II are complete, with normal ferry service resuming this afternoon, Tuesday, Oct. 27. The first departure from Steilacoom was scheduled for approximately 3:15 p.m.

County staff are also assisting with traffic control on Anderson Island as operations return to normal.

I know how challenging this extended disruption has been for residents and families in our 28th Legislative District who depend on ferry service every day. As a member of the Senate Transportation Committee, I understand how critical reliable transportation is for our island communities as well.

Thank you to the crews who worked to restore service and to our island neighbors for their patience!

It was an honor to celebrate 60 years of Scott Funeral Home and Cremation Services — the second-longest-operating Black business in Tacoma’s Hilltop community. ✨

For six decades, Scott Funeral Home has cared for families during some of life’s most difficult moments while building a legacy rooted in dignity, compassion and service.

Black-owned businesses create jobs, strengthen neighborhoods and carry knowledge that must be represented at the tables where decisions are made. As a legislator, I’ll continue working to expand economic opportunity and shape policies with the business owners and community leaders they affect.

Congratulations to the Scott family and the entire team on this remarkable milestone! 🫶🏾

Got to put my coaching hat back on and learn a few new moves at Girls on the Field! 🏈

I had a wonderful time talking with girls and families, trying flag football drills and picking up tips from Tacoma’s own Marcus Trufant, our 2026 Seattle Seahawks Legend of the Year. It was a pleasure to introduce Marcus and recognize his continued investment in young people across our communities.

Thank you to the Washington State Women's Commission and all the partners who brought us together to support girls’ participation in sports!

As a former coach and educator, I know how much girls can gain from being part of a team, from finding their voice to learning how to support one another through a challenge. As a senator, I want to help ensure our schools and communities give more girls access to those experiences.

Grateful for a day of learning, connection and a little friendly competition! 💚💙

I am deeply honored to be named the 2026 Outstanding Service to Veterans – Legislator Award recipient by the Governor’s Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee and the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs.

The military community has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a military family, experienced the realities of military life as a spouse, and now have the privilege of serving a district that is home to Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Those experiences have shaped how I approach this work and the responsibility I feel to our servicemembers, veterans and their families.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to join Team McChord’s Civic Leader Flight and see firsthand the work of the 62nd Airlift Wing. Moments like that — and, even more importantly, conversations with veterans and military families throughout our community — help inform the work I bring back to Olympia.

This recognition means so much to me, but what matters most is continuing to listen, show up and make sure those who have served our country and their families are supported here at home. I am grateful to our veterans for their service and to the many people across Washington who work every day to serve those who served. 🇺🇸🫶🏾

⛴️ Pierce County Ferry Service Update ⛴️

Heads up to our Anderson Island and Ketron Island neighbors in the 28th Legislative District: Ferry service will remain suspended through Monday, Oct. 26, as crews work to resolve a mechanical issue.

Pierce County has identified the replacement parts needed and is working with a contractor in Canada to secure them as quickly as possible.

I know how disruptive this is for island residents and families in our district who rely on ferry service for work, appointments and everyday needs. As your state senator and a member of the Senate Transportation Committee, I alsounderstand how critical these connections are and will continue following restoration efforts.

⚠️ Riders should make alternative plans and watch for additional updates from Pierce County.

Thank you to the crews working to restore service and to our island neighbors for their patience. 💙

For emergencies, call 911.

That's a wrap on my 28th Legislative District FAFSA Completion Tour! 🫶🏾

I had a great morning at Curtis Senior High School in University Place, talking with students about their goals, financial aid opportunities, and the many pathways available after high school.

From Lakewood to Steilacoom and now University Place, this tour has been about helping students explore their options and making sure cost isn't what keeps them from pursuing their dreams.

As chair of the Senate Higher Education & Workforce Development Committee, hearing directly from students helps inform the work we're doing in Olympia to expand access to education and workforce opportunities.

A big THANK YOU to the students, educators, counselors, and administrators at Curtis and across the 28th for their partnership and leadership!

The tour may be over, but the work continues through Washington's Your Future, Funded initiative. Financial aid resources are available to help students take their next step:

Every Washingtonian deserves to feel safe and confident when casting their ballot. 🗳️🩵

I support Governor Bob Ferguson's decision to offer additional election security resources to counties ahead of Election Day, including the option to request assistance from the Washington National Guard.

This support would help monitor ballot drop boxes and other voting locations, with Guard personnel working discreetly and coordinating with local authorities if concerns arise. Counties can decide whether these additional resources would be helpful alongside their existing security plans.

I'm also grateful to our county auditors and election workers who work tirelessly to protect the integrity of our elections. Their preparation, professionalism and commitment to ensuring every eligible vote is counted are essential to maintaining public trust in our democratic process.

As we approach Election Day, I appreciate the partnership between state and local officials to keep our elections safe, secure and accessible to every eligible Washington voter. 🤝🏾

From Washington state to Oxford, England! 🇬🇧✨

I recently had the opportunity to join healthcare employers, SEIU Healthcare 1199NW and the Healthcare Training Fund in Oxford to learn from the United Kingdom’s National Health Service (NHS) and Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust about their approaches to workforce development and apprenticeship programs.

We spent time exploring how proven training models could help Washington expand pathways into nursing and other healthcare careers, strengthen our workforce and better meet the needs of patients and providers.

As chair of the Senate Higher Education & Workforce Development Committee, I know how important it is to connect education and training with the needs of our workforce. Learning from programs already in place elsewhere gives us an opportunity to consider new approaches that could benefit Washington workers, employers and the communities they serve.

Thank you to the Healthcare Training Fund and our partners in Oxford for bringing us together for these important conversations. I look forward to carrying what we learned into our work here at home! ❤️
