Florida Municipal Electric Association Promoting a positive image and enhancing public confidence in municipal electric utilities.

The Florida Municipal Electric Association (FMEA) represents the unified interests of 33 public power communities across Florida. FMEA was established in 1942 in response to WWII fuel shortages and is now the official meeting place for Florida’s public power community. Municipal electric utilities provide low-cost, reliable electric service, and have been doing so for over a century. In addition to municipal electric utility members, FMEA has three other membership categories: associate member companies, public agencies, and affiliates. Together, FMEA staff and utility members work to protect public power’s legislative, regulatory and operational interests, and to strengthen our common bonds for the benefit of Florida’s communities. Public power utilities play an important role in Florida’s electric industry:

- Serve 15 percent of the state’s population – 3.0 million Floridians;
- Provide an industry-wide yardstick for efficient operation and superior service;
- Promote increased wholesale competition to lower consumer power costs, and have been at the forefront of efforts to improve wholesale transmission access;
- Are community-owned and locally managed; and
- Support local government with transfer payments, which help communities pay for fire and police protection and other important local services. FMEA provides its members with government relations, communications and education services. The association is at the forefront of energy industry trends, and advances public power utilities toward enhancing services and continually innovating in all aspects of utility operations.

FMEA attended the American Public Power Association’s Customer Connections Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, this week to connect, collaborate, and spark innovation alongside industry trailblazers from across the country. Thank you to the representatives from several Florida public power communities who expertly presented at the conference on topics regarding how to apply your utility’s data to better manage the customer experience during peak demand; to communicate clearly and effectively with customers on the issues that matter most; and to create self-service opportunities for customers to use at their convenience: JEA, Keys Energy Services and Kissimmee Utility Authority. Congratulations to APPA for a successful event!

Meet Giant Company: Don’t take their bait! Giant Company was one name for a massive scam operation based internationally but targeting regular Americans like you and your grandparents. Scammers and phishing attackers impersonate your bank, your boss, a delivery company, customer support, or even a family member. They want you to click their links, take their phone calls, open their DMs, respond to their “accidental” texts, and, eventually, send them your hard-earned money.

To combat scammers like them, be extremely suspicious of every unexpected inbound message, especially if it seems urgent, like fear (“you just got hacked!”) and pressure (“you won an expensive grill!”). You don’t need to click. You don’t need to respond. You don’t need to answer the phone. You aren’t being rude. Their biggest enemy isn’t technology. It’s your skepticism.
