Tribal Hazard Mitigation Plan Open for Public Comment

The purpose of Tribal Hazard Mitigation is to develop a long‑term strategy by which tribal governments can reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. Hazard mitigation is defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as “any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from hazards". Hazard mitigation is most effective when based on an inclusive, comprehensive and long-term plan that is developed before a disaster occurs. FEMA recognizes that the tribal right of self-governance substantiates that the Sac & Fox Tribe of the Mississippi is a sovereign entity. In order to receive funding from FEMA, for projects outside of disaster relief support, governing bodies are required to maintain Hazard mitigation plans.

Please share your thoughts and ideas to improve the Meskwaki Nation Hazard Mitigation Plan. It is open for public comment until Friday, November 13, 2026 at 4:30 PM. Thank you!

August wrapped up data collection portion of the 2026 water quality monitoring season for MNR staff.

Between April and August, Environmental Specialists from MNR returned to 8 pre-determined sites along waterways of the Settlement to collect data that will give insight to the quality of water on the Settlement. Data is collected in several ways, from physical grab-samples of water that are analyzed by the State Hygienic Lab to observational data recorded on rapid-habitat assessment forms and field notes.

Now that the data for this sampling season has been collected, MNR staff will work to wrangle the data into a comprehensive report of the water quality of the Settlement in 2026.

If you have any questions regarding the waterways of the Settlement, please contact Environmental Specialist, Jamie Panosh, at MNR

Below are a couple pictures snapped in the field this season by our Environmental Specialists.

September 18th was World Water Monitoring Day!

Clean water is crucial for everyone. This is a day meant to highlight the importance of monitoring and assessing waterways for the health and safety of humans as well as the ecosystem.

MNR takes this commitment to heart as the department maintains an EPA approved 106 Water Quality Monitoring Program, which collects data on the water bodies within the Settlement on an annual basis. Consistent monitoring is crucial to protect water ways from pollutants such as sediment, nutrients, bacteria, and trace metals.
