📱🚨 911 KNOWS WHERE I AM… RIGHT?

Did you know that when you call 911 from your cell phone, your call might initially reach a 911 center in a different town?

When you dial 911, the wireless network helps route your call based on cell tower coverage and available location information.

For example, you could be standing in Wilmington, but your phone may be connected to a tower in Tewksbury. Depending on how the call is routed, your call could initially reach NMRECC instead of Wilmington's 911 center.

📍 BUT DOESN'T 911 KNOW MY LOCATION?

Next Generation 911 (NG911) has greatly improved location technology, but it's not always immediate or perfectly accurate.

Your initial location may only be approximate, with more accurate information becoming available as the call continues. Buildings, terrain, and wireless coverage can also affect accuracy.

❓ THAT'S WHY WE ASK: "WHERE IS YOUR EMERGENCY?"

Even when a location appears on our screens, our dispatchers will ask you to confirm it. This helps us verify your location and ensure the correct police, fire, or EMS department responds.

🚨 WHEN CALLING 911, REMEMBER:
✅ Know your town, street address, or nearby landmarks.
✅ Answer the dispatcher's location questions, even if you think we already know.
✅ If your call reaches a different 911 center, **don't hang up!** Stay on the line so we can get you connected to the right agency.

💛 Technology helps, but your voice matters most.

When seconds count, knowing WHERE makes a difference.

Our Executive Director is away this week attending the APCO Atlantic Conference, and we’re happy to report that operations back home are going extremely well…

The phones are ringing.
The radios are working.
The CAD is up.
Snack table is fully stocked.
And absolutely nothing is on fire… 👀🔥

In all seriousness, our team is holding down the fort while the boss is away — keeping Dracut and Tewksbury covered 24/7, just like always.

Enjoy the conference, Brian. There is absolutely no reason to come home early. 😅😂

🎉 Congratulations, Grace! 🎧📞

NMRECC is excited to congratulate Telecommunicator Grace Nashawaty on successfully completing her training program and being released to work independently!

Becoming a Public Safety Telecommunicator requires months of training across call-taking, emergency medical and fire protocols, radio operations, policies, procedures, and the countless situations that can come through a 911 center on any given shift.

Grace has put in the time, hard work, and dedication needed to reach this milestone, and we’re excited to officially welcome her to the floor as a fully released member of the NMRECC team.

Congratulations, Grace — training complete! Now the real fun begins! 😁

09/03/2026

As the weather warmed up and our communities became busier, NMRECC saw an increase in call volume from May through August compared with the first four months of 2026.

📊 May–August 2026 by the numbers:
• 22,699 Business Line Calls
• 5,944 911 Calls
• 28,643 Total Calls

That’s 1,975 more calls than January through April, an overall increase of approximately 7.4%.

The increase was even more noticeable for 911, with 823 more 911 calls. That's about a 16% increase compared with January through April. Increased activity during the summer months may be one factor contributing to that higher demand.

📅 Busiest Day: Friday — 3,655 calls
⏰ Peak Hour: 2 PM–3 PM — 2,118 calls

These calls happen while our dispatchers are also managing radio traffic, coordinating police, fire, and EMS resources, and providing critical pre-arrival instructions.

Behind every number is a caller looking for help, information, reassurance, or emergency assistance — and our dispatchers are ready to answer.

Thank you to our telecommunicators for their professionalism, teamwork, and dedication every hour of every day. 💛

20 Deployments. Countless Hours. One Mission.

This week, the Massachusetts Telecommunicator Emergency Response Taskforce (MA TERT) reached an incredible milestone: 20 deployments since our inception.

What began as an idea to support our fellow telecommunicators during their most difficult moments has grown into a statewide network of dedicated professionals who answer the call when agencies need them most.

Over the past 20 deployments, MA TERT members have:
✅Provided staffing relief following line-of-duty deaths and other critical incidents.
✅ Allowed dispatchers to attend funeral services, debriefings, and take the time they needed to care for themselves and one another.
✅ Traveled across the Commonwealth, often with little notice, to support agencies during some of their hardest days.
✅ Demonstrated the true meaning of professionalism, compassion, and service.

These deployments represent far more than a number. They represent hundreds of volunteers, thousands of hours of coverage, and an unwavering commitment to ensuring no communications center has to face tragedy alone.

To every MA TERT member, Team Lead, participating agency, and the families who support our volunteers, thank you. Your willingness to step up for one another continues to make this program a success.

As we mark our 20th deployment in Northborough, we remain committed to the mission that started it all: telecommunicators supporting telecommunicators.

Here's to the next 20. 💙📞
