Firefighters celebrate Halloween with children at VCMC

VCFD, in partnership with Oxnard Fire Department and Ventura City Fire Department, helped pediatric patients and their families at Ventura County Medical Center celebrate Halloween yesterday.

Firefighters donned superhero costumes and rappelled from the roof into the courtyard to greet the waiting children. Gift bags donated by firefighters were handed out, and for patients who couldn’t join the fun outside, crews went room to room, visiting with families, delivering bags, and bringing a little Halloween fun to their day.

VCFD, Oxnard Fire, and Ventura City Fire are partners in Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 7 (US&R TF-7), training together for incident responses locally and throughout California. We were honored to share this annual tradition with both of our partner agencies.

Thank you to the amazing staff at VCMC for your tireless care and support of our community, and for welcoming us to be part of this celebration for these families.

50 community members complete CERT training 🔥

This past weekend, our CERT instructors and firefighters from Station 50 hosted a final day of CERT training at our Regional Training Center in Camarillo.

Nearly 50 participants worked through realistic emergency scenarios, including treating simulated medical victims, performing extrications, using extinguishers on live fires, and practicing search techniques.

The FEMA-sponsored Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program teaches community members about the potential disasters that could affect them at any time—and how to safely, responsibly, and efficiently respond to them. CERT educates volunteers in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, team organization, hazard awareness, and disaster medical operations. The six-week course meets once a week and is offered regularly in communities across Ventura County.

Thank you to our incredibly dedicated team of CERT instructors for leading this program and helping prepare members of our community for all types of disasters and emergencies.

Yesterday afternoon, VCFD along with Ventura City Fire, US Forest Service, CAL FIRE, and VCSO responded to a brush fire in the 1900 block of Ranch Road, outside the city of Ojai.

Units arrived on scene to find a 1/4 acre fire in medium to heavy fuels with a slow rate of spread. Despite being in a challenging to access location, firefighters worked to get apparatus in position and hose lines in place quickly to aggressively attack the fire and keep it from spreading. VCFD’s Firehawk helicopter made repeated water drops, while fixed wing aircraft dropped retardant along a ridge line just to keep the fire from spreading beyond its initial footprint.

The coordinated effort from the ground stopped forward progress on the fire at 0.66 acres. Crews remained on scene for hours completing mop-up operations and coordinating with our UAS (drone) pilots to ensure any hot spots were identified and completely mopped up.

Firefighters will be returning to patrol the fire throughout the day today - ensuring there are no remaining hotspots and backhauling any remaining equipment on scene.

Over 70 firefighters from VCFD and our partner agencies responded to the incident. There were no structures threatened or damaged by the fire, and no injuries to firefighters or civilians. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

What Is a Red Flag Warning? 🚩
A Red Flag Warning is issued by the National Weather Service for our area when weather conditions create a significantly increased risk of rapidly spreading wildfire. Those conditions include:

📍Relative humidity of 15% or less with either sustained winds of 25 mph or greater, or frequent gusts 35mph or greater
-OR-
📍Relative humidity of 10% or less % with either sustained winds up to 15 mph or greater, or frequent gusts 25 mph or greater

These conditions are part of the criteria the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) uses to upstaff additional firefighters and apparatus, ensuring our crews are ready to respond quickly and aggressively to brush fires across the county.

Three ways to prepare:

✔️ Make a plan: Decide where you’ll go and how you’ll get there if an evacuation order is issued for your area.

✔️Build a kit: Pack medications, water, and other basic necessities so you can leave on short notice.

✔️Stay informed: Follow VCEmergency.com for the latest incident updates and evacuation alerts.

VCFD encourages all residents to visit fire.venturacounty.gov/readysetgo for more wildfire preparedness tips and resources.

Important Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Tips for Fire Prevention Week 2026

October 4-10 is Fire Prevention Week, and this year's theme from the National Fire Protection Association is "Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging is a Superpower."

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we rely on every day, from phones and computers to e-bikes and electric vehicles. As they become more common, firefighters are responding to more fires and emergencies linked to them.

Smart choices every time you plug in make the difference. Here are six simple steps to help you charge safely:

📍Cheap charger? Don't chance it: Use the cord and charger that came with your device, or one approved by the manufacturer.

📍Soft surface? Hard pass: Charge on something hard and flat, like a table, desk or bare floor.

📍Fully charged? Time to unplug: Once your device hits 100%, disconnect it.

📍For tools and rides, charge outside: When possible, charge larger items like e-bikes, scooters and power tools outdoors.

📍Feels hot? Shut it down: Stop using your device if it feels hot, starts to swell, smells strange, leaks, smokes, or makes popping or hissing sounds.

📍On a flight? Keep it out in sight: While in the air, keep devices where you can see them as they charge. Don't charge e-cigarettes or vapes onboard, and tell a flight attendant if you notice a problem.
