⚠️WARNING: While this video does not contain graphic content, the footage is alarming and may be disturbing to watch.

A split second. That's all that separated this moment from a tragedy.

Last weekend, our officers responded to multiple calls for motorists with flat tires. The footage you are about to see is from the in-car camera of the first patrol vehicle positioned to block traffic and protect those at the scene. As one of our officers stepped out to place additional traffic cones, a distracted driver came dangerously close to striking him.

There were no squealing tires. No warning sounds. Our officer just happened to look up at exactly the right moment. The driver didn't even apply their brakes until after driving over a traffic cone.

That officer is a husband. A father. A grandfather. A friend. A coworker. He has a family waiting for him to come home after every shift.

The same is true of every other first responder, construction worker, and fellow motorist you pass on the road. They are people with families, friends, and lives that matter.

The driver admitted to being on their phone and was issued multiple citations including failing to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle.

We share this video because we desperately want you to understand what is at stake every time you get behind the wheel. Please. Put your phone down. Slow down. Pay attention. Move over.

Our officers know there are risks that come with putting on the uniform. But being struck by someone who simply wasn't paying attention should never be one of them.

We are incredibly grateful that our officer went home to his family that day. We need your help making sure everyone else does, too.

Please don't wait until a tragedy happens to take distracted driving seriously.

At the final Police, Fire & EMS Commission meeting of the year, four members of our department were recognized for their outstanding work and dedication.

🔵Chief's Awards of Excellence🔵

Detective Alex Gowen was recognized for his exceptional investigative work on a complex fraud case involving the theft and use of a disabled victim's credit card information, resulting in more than $102,000 in losses. During the investigation, Detective Gowen also uncovered a separate Social Security fraud scheme involving another vulnerable victim. His thorough investigative efforts led to the identification and arrest of five suspects, including the victim's caretaker.

Captain Jeff McNutt, Lieutenant Dan Duddleston, and Communications Coordinator Kati Ceriotti were recognized for their contributions to the planning, preparation, and ex*****on of a successful operations plan for the 2026 BMW Championship. The success of this major event was made possible through strong regional partnerships, collaboration, effective long-range planning, and the selection and facilitation of a strong Unified Command team.

Please join us in congratulating all four recipients! Their hard work, professionalism, and dedication reflect the high standards of service we strive to provide every day.

We loved getting out into our neighborhoods, catching up with familiar faces, and meeting new ones at National Night Out last week!

A huge thank you to Mari de Villa Senior Living for hosting us, to all the residents and subdivisions who participated, and to our friends at West Central Dispatch Center and West County EMS & Fire Protection District for helping make the evening such a success. A special thank you as well to those members of our Board of Aldermen who joined us and spent the evening connecting with residents.

Enjoy some of our favorite moments from the evening!

We face painted, tested your pitching speeds, and handed out LOTS of glow sticks. We had so much fun spending the evening with our community and are already coming up with new ideas to make our booth even more fun next year!

In the meantime, enjoy a few photos from this year's Fire & Ice event at Longview Farm Park!
