This past week, a group of about 20 homeschooled children and their parents took a tour of some of Vernon's historic sites. They started at the seven-generation Hinchman-Rickey Farm, the longest operating farm. After visiting the farm, they visited the historic St. Thomas Chapel, the oldest church, and then went to the 10,000-year-old Black Creek Indian Site. They learned about the historic significance of these sites and the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. They also saw the great spearpoints and arrowheads from the Black Creek Site. The children left with cool gifts: a coloring book of Vernon's historic sites, a refrigerator magnet with our name and logo, a 250th-anniversary blow-up beach ball, and brochures of the Black Creek Site and the Western Highlands Scenic Byway. The tour was wonderful, and the children were engaged! The Vernon Township Historical Society loves to provide these tours and programs for our community. 'Hands-On History" is one of our most popular programs, held at our one-room Price's Switch Schoolhouse. The children absolutely love this program and love the one-room schoolhouse. They learn all about what school was like in the 19th century and up to the 1950s when this schoolhouse officially closed and Walnut Ridge School opened.
