Happy ! Today we have a photo of 4 Great Northern Railroad employees in 1909. We do not know the two men in the middle but we believe the man on the left is A.E. Cantelon and the man on the right is Heath Graham. The sign clearly says O.R.T. which stands for Order of Railroad Telegraphers. The O.R.T. was a labor union created in the late 1880s. Because these men were essentially air traffic controllers for trains, the O.R.T was specific to just railroad telegraphers as they believed they were occupationally distinct to commercial telegraphers who worked in telegraph offices and primarily handled commodities reports, news reports, and personal messages.

Good morning and happy ! Today we have a great photo of Dakota Red! Dakota's real name was Albert P. Shoemaker. Per the newspaper he was "a famous lake character." He filed for a homestead in the area in 1923. It appears that his fishery was at Sandy Beach which we posted last week. Per a newspaper article in December of 1926, he also had a "hotel" at Sandy Beach. He received a lot of traffic as it was located about halfway between Warroad and Oak Island. All the teams hauling supplies to the Angle during the winter would stop at his place to rest. The famous story of Dakota Red was that he was allegedly a horse thief and he ended up in the Angle/Warroad because he was an outlaw on the run.

Good morning and happy ! Did you know Warroad was a tourist destination over a century ago? People used to visit to hunt waterfowl and game birds in the early 20th century. This is a photo of John Lawson, the elder* YOUNGER brother of Tom Lawson. John did not live in Warroad though he would visit from Wisconsin occasionally. After Tom Lawson and Tom Jones ended their partnership, John put up majority share to start the Warroad Mercantile. We are not certain exactly when this photo was taken, but we think it is around the mid 1900s-1910s.

With information from the comments it may be John T. Lawson, the first born son of Tom Lawson.

What can you tell us about the Stockade Service Station that was located in Warroad?

Main Street (Lake Street) in Warroad, 1915, with the schools on the river in the background. Marvin Lumber and Cedar is next to the railroad.

The river was quite full then.
