At this morning’s CEAL markup, I delivered remarks on B26-0436, the Fair Initiatives Lend Transparency to Every Resident Amendment Act.

I supported the Committee Print because voters deserve clear, transparent ballot initiatives that allow them to weigh in on each proposal independently.

Today, as we celebrate America’s 250th birthday, we reflect on our nation’s history, honor the progress we have made, and recommit ourselves to building a stronger, more just, and more inclusive future for all.

As you celebrate, please remember to stay hydrated, take breaks indoors to cool down, and check in on neighbors and loved ones, especially while the District remains under extreme heat conditions.

Today, I had the opportunity to meet with members of the Restaurant Association Metropolitan Washington to hear directly about what restaurants and hospitality businesses are seeing across the District, and how the Council can continue to be a constructive partner.

Our restaurant ecosystem is central to DC’s neighborhoods, economy, and culture. It creates jobs, supports local corridors, brings residents and visitors together, and helps make our city vibrant. I appreciated the thoughtful conversation on how we can continue supporting restaurants, workers, and small businesses across the District.

My statement during today’s Committee of the Whole meeting, where the Council considered the FY27 Local Budget Act and Budget Support Act. This budget season has required difficult choices, but it also reflects months of advocacy from residents, community organizations, Council staff, and colleagues working to protect critical services and move us closer to a budget that meets the needs of District residents.

As we move toward second reading, I remain committed to working with my colleagues to address remaining concerns and advance a budget that better serves residents across the District.

Today, June 5, is National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

We to honor the lives of those affected by gun violence and to call attention to the preventable violence that continues to impact communities across our nation.

The movement was inspired by the life of Hadiya Pendleton, a young girl who was shot and killed in Chicago just one week after marching in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. Her friends wore orange in her memory, choosing a color connected to protection and safety.
Today, orange stands for remembrance, peace, and solidarity with survivors, families, advocates, and communities demanding safer neighborhoods.

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a school community, a workplace, and a future. Today and every day, we must keep working toward a District where every resident is safe, supported, and valued. 🧡

Yesterday, I joined my colleagues on the Council, Mayor Bowser, members of the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ+ Affairs and various allies in raising the Pride flag at the Wilson Building.

This flag is more than a symbol. It reflects the pride, support, and commitment we have for our LGBTQ+ community here in the District and around the world.

I am proud to show up for the LGBTQ+ community, to stand as an ally, and to continue working toward a District where every resident is seen, respected, protected, and free to live with pride.
