Happy Senior Fest, DC!

I had a wonderful time celebrating DC seniors at the Senior Fest Block Party at the Gateway DC Pavilion.

From line dancing and live entertainment to food, health resources, and meaningful conversations, the event was a beautiful opportunity to spend time with seniors from across the District, hear what matters most to them, and celebrate the joy, wisdom, and community they bring to our city.

Our seniors deserve to feel supported, connected, and valued, and I am grateful for opportunities like Senior Fest to listen, learn, and continue showing up for them. Thank you to DC Department of Parks and Recreation for hosting this great event!

Committee mark-ups are happening this week as the Council continues its work on the FY27 budget.

These meetings are an important part of the budget process, where committees review, discuss, and vote on budget recommendations before the full Council takes up the budget. Stay engaged and follow along as decisions are made about funding priorities that impact communities across the District.

It was a pleasure to speak at the DC Chamber of Commerce’s 2026 Small Business Summit & Showcase and connect with so many business owners, entrepreneurs, and community leaders working every day to move our city forward.

Small businesses are at the heart of our communities and our economy, and I remain committed to advancing policies that make it easier for businesses across the District to start, grow, and succeed.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend the DC Bar Foundation President’s Reception and connect with leaders and advocates committed to expanding access to justice across the District, including CEO Kirra L. Jarratt.

One of the biggest themes throughout the evening was the importance of ensuring low- and moderate-income residents have access to legal support and resources when navigating the civil legal system. Access to justice can have a direct impact on housing stability, family security, employment, and overall quality of life for District residents.

Thank you to the DC Bar Foundation for bringing together so many individuals dedicated to strengthening legal access and support for communities across DC.

A lighthearted moment during today’s Committee of the Whole meeting on Bill 26-57, the “Motor Vehicle Insurance Modernization Act of 2026.” Even during important discussions, there’s still room for a little laughter.

Celebrating a true D.C. legacy!

Yesterday, I had the privilege of speaking at the Grand Re-Opening & Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Ben's Chili Bowl, reflecting on the importance of this historic space and what it continues to mean to our city.

We honor Virginia Ali for creating not only a restaurant, but an iconic place where people from all over the nation come together to enjoy great food and community.

Since opening in 1958, Ben’s has been a cornerstone for our city, where generations of DC residents have gathered, connected, and built community through decades of change.

For so many Washingtonians, this isn’t just a landmark, it’s part of our story. Here’s to honoring that legacy and continuing it for generations to come.

Celebrating the heart of Shaw at Eat.Drink.Shaw 2026!

Shaw continues to lead, not just here in DC, but nationally, with millions of visitors each year experiencing the energy, culture, and community that define this neighborhood. From spots like Doro Soul Food to Unconventional Diner, it’s clear that Shaw’s small businesses are more than places to eat and drink, they are what bring people together and keep our city vibrant.

To every chef, restaurateur, bartender, and small business owner, thank you for the character, creativity and resilience you bring to this community every day. To every resident who shows up, supports, and uplifts these businesses, thank you for helping Shaw thrive.

Thank you to The Howard Theatre for providing an incredible venue for this celebration.

I am proud to celebrate with Shaw Main Streets and this amazing community. Let’s keep showing up for Shaw and neighborhoods all across the District!

Earlier this week, my team and I had the opportunity to connect with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Women in Blue, DCAR, the Jewish Community Relations Council, Thrive Under 25 Coalition, and celebrating the 30th anniversary of Safe Shores. These advocates and organizations work every day to move our city forward.

From supporting emerging adults and strengthening youth workforce pathways to advancing housing affordability, community safety, and standing firmly against hate, these conversations continue to shape our work as we push for solutions that meet residents where they are and create real opportunity across the District.
