Students and staff at our Rockland BOCES River View High School, dressed in pink, gathered outside the school to walk the track, honoring those we have lost to breast cancer and celebrating the brave warriors still fighting today. This year's walk was held in remembrance of Mr. Jeffrey Schragenheim, a beloved Science Teacher at River View High School who tragically passed away this summer. Schragenheim's family joined our River View community to commemorate his life and raise awareness.

Since its establishment in 1985, Breast Cancer Awareness Month has empowered communities to recognize the signs, encourage screenings, and support life-saving research.

Congratulations to Elisheva, our Rockland BOCES Jesse J. Kaplan School “MOVER of the Month” for October! Since joining the MOVE™ program, Elisheva has improved her trunk strength and kept moving, allowing her to participate more in the classroom and with her peers.

“Elisheva is a great student,” says Kaplan Physical Therapist Ryan Linehan. “She loves to move and is working on various skills that help her facilitate steps, get trunk strength through standing and generally help her get moving.”

Elisheva comes to Rockland BOCES from the Nanuet Union Free School District.

Kaplan’s MOVE™ (Mobility Opportunities via Education) program combines therapy and education to teach children with physical disabilities and complex needs the functional skills of sitting, standing, and walking. MOVE™ aims to give children an opportunity to lead more independent and fulfilling lives. Every child deserves the right to MOVE™.

Teachers at our Rockland BOCES Jesse J. Kaplan School expand their knowledge to better assist our students. Kaplan physical therapists met with teachers to demonstrate how to use equipment like gait trainers and various methods for transitioning students between equipment. These lessons will help them assist students in the classroom to offer the best education possible.

During National Physical Therapy Month, we want to take a moment to recognize and thank all our Rockland BOCES Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants across the agency for all they do for our students!

Our Rockland BOCES Career and Technical Education Center (CTEC) is bettering the community one structure at a time! Students in Frank DeToma's Carpentry Class install a new storage shed for the Nanuet Little League, a project they built at the end of the last school year.

As part of the Rockland BOCES mission, we involve our students in the community we serve, working collaboratively with local businesses and non-profit organizations to offer volunteer and internship opportunities to our learners.

It's fall for our Rockland BOCES Lumina School at Viola! Young learners in Mr. Mark's Little Stars classroom visit Secor Farm to pick pumpkins- the start of their autumnal adventures! Back in the classroom, learners used interactive activities to challenge their memory of the trip using their various senses. But the learning didn't stop there; students then read "The Runaway Pumpkin" and answered questions about the book before decorating their pumpkins. Creating their own unique designs by cutting out tissue paper and gluing it to the pumpkins, students engaged their fine motor skills while expressing themselves.

The Little Stars program emphasizes academic interventions, self-regulation and collaborative problem-solving for neurodivergent learners and was created to meet the needs of our component districts.

Time to clock in at the PAES Lab! District-Based students at Tappan Zee High School's COVE program gain hands-on experience as they explore career skills through PAES (Practical Assessment Exploration System), a curriculum that brings work-based learning into the classroom. Learners come to "work" and put on their apron, clock in using their unique ID, and check in with their "supervisor" to get their task, grab their box and follow the instructions. Each box contains a task for students to complete that aligns with a skill needed across various industries. This provides students with the skills they need to succeed!
