For a safe & fun Halloween, keep the "trick" out of your kid's treats!

Check over their Halloween candies before they eat anything. It's not just about watching out for allergies, but also making sure that gummies are candy rather than THC edibles.

Help your kids understand that they need a trusted adult's permission before they eat anything they get from strangers!

Let's keep Halloween Happy! Before anyone goes trick or treating, be sure to talk to your kids about safety during trick-or-treating, and check over any candy they receive to make sure it's safe. This is also a great time to remind little kids they should never eat anything their family hasn't okayed.... and to let teens know that there are counterfeit candies and counterfeit drugs out there to be aware of.

Parents, if you haven't talked with your kids about substance use, it's time! Even little kids notice that they see adults drinking or va**ng at home or in public or in the movies. They have questions and they want to know what you think!

is an annual awareness week to help you start those tricky conversations. Take advantage of natural opportunities like finding a v**e in the playground to have a brief conversation. You can keep it simple: ask what they know, provide age-appropriate information ("that's not safe for kids") and teach them a strategy ("always ask your parents or teacher before you eat or drink anything someone else offers you.")

The free "Talk. They Hear You" app can help you learn about today's drugs and get ideas for talking with your kids at any age.

We had a great time at the Westport Library’s Pink or Treat children’s book event during Red Ribbon Week! We loved connecting with families, sharing helpful resources and prevention materials with parents, and handing out our Red Ribbon Week placemats to encourage healthy, drug-free choices.
