*10/26 UPDATE #2 @ 7:30 P.M.

*We will open up Main Street during morning pick up and afternoon drop off. Between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Main Street in this area will be intermittently closed. Fifth Avenue will remain closed for the time being. The attached map will be applicable between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.*

Due to an unforeseen circumstance, Main Street will be closed at 5th Avenue. The contractor and Town Staff will be working in this area tomorrow to try and get it open ASAP. The Wiggins School District has been notified that the drop-off/pick-up loop will not be accessible from Main Street. The options are to drop-off at the school entrance on Main Street and make a U-turn or enter the loop from the back of the school on Curry Street.

We will have daily updates until the road reopens.

*10/22 UPDATE*

ASPHALT TIME! Yes, you heard it here first: Saturday will be asphalt day! The contractor has notified us that 1,850 tons of asphalt are scheduled for delivery on Saturday. The paving crew from Chato’s Juarez Company, LLC will work hard all day to pave Main Street. We are excited that this project is getting closer to completion.

Thanks again for your patience with the process. Normally, projects like these take six months or more to plan, engineer, survey, construct, etc. Everyone came together in three short months to move this project along at breakneck speed. We will identify all the team players on our opening day post, coming soon!

*10/8 UPDATE*

The Main Street paving project is continuing to progress. The crew has poured the curb, gutter, and sidewalk. As they finish up the concrete and additional dirt work, we should see asphalt being laid in the next week or so. As you can see, extensive dirt work was required to raise the road a few feet to accommodate future development and allow proper drainage.

Thanks again for your patience with the process. In the end, we will have a great roadway that will last for many years to come!

Hello Wiggins,

We understand how frustrating it is that the fall baseball season was canceled. Parents registered their kids expecting the season to happen, and it’s disappointing to see it canceled after families have already made plans. But the numbers don't support teams and games happening only in town. We had only 20 children signed up across the three age groups: 3-4 year olds, 5-6 year olds, and 7-8 year olds. Baseball would not combine well because the 3-4-year-olds are T-ball aged, the 5-6-year-olds are coach pitch, and the 7-8-year-olds are kid pitch. Having a 5-year-old play against an 8-year-old would not be appropriate.

We had the same problem with participation numbers and soccer, and before canceling an entire season, we looked at alternatives and decided to combine age groups. We now have seven teams identified, but only three coaches have volunteered. Unless we have more volunteer coaches step up, the soccer season may also be canceled. If we get enough coaches, we will consider moving any child who wanted to play baseball to a soccer team.

Basketball is the same; the Town doesn't have enough participants to support a standalone league, so we coordinate with the Northern Valley Athletic Association (NVAA), as several other towns do.

Parks and Recreation programs in small towns are a struggle, not just in Wiggins. Of approximately 140 towns with a population of 2,000 or less, only about six have a dedicated Parks and Recreation department, Wiggins included. Another 14 towns have municipal recreation programs, leaving almost 120 towns that combine with other municipal and regional recreation programs. We may need to combine more with regional recreation programs in certain sports to continue offering these programs to our children.

Since 2022, we have had five different Parks and Recreation Coordinators, all of whom were part-time and left the program voluntarily, mainly for personal/family reasons. During the same period, multiple sports seasons were faced with cancellation due to a lack of volunteer coaches; this is not a new problem. In January 2026, we advertised for a full-time Parks and Recreation Coordinator and got two applications. One person was from Akron, and one person was from Wiggins. While they may not have been the most qualified, they were the only ones who stepped up and tried to make a difference.

The last thing we want is to cancel sports seasons; we want the program to succeed, but we will need your help to make it happen. If you want to volunteer to coach or help our Parks and Recreation program in any way, please let us know by calling 970-483-6161 or emailing us. We have a new email address that is monitored by multiple people at [email protected]

We hope we can count on you to help us find solutions that work for our program and our kids!

*9/30 UPDATE*

As mentioned in our original post below, this schedule is subject to change. As of today's date the project is still 3-4 weeks out due to additional dirt work that needs to be completed. We will update progress on a weekly basis until completion.

Thank you for your patience, you all are doing great with the disruption!

The Town of Wiggins is officially announcing a major roadway paving project scheduled to begin on September 7, 2026. The infrastructure improvement project is contracted for completion by September 30, 2026.*

This project aims to improve driving conditions, strengthen the roadway, and extend its lifespan. Work will include extensive dirt work, asphalt milling, resurfacing, and adding a sidewalk on the west side of Main Street.

Project Details & Timeline
Start Date: Monday, September 7, 2026
Estimated Completion: Wednesday, September 30, 2026
Location: Main Street between Tiger Way and County Road P

Traffic Impact & Detours
Motorists should expect Main Street to be closed for the duration of the project. Suggested detour routes during construction: Traffic from Kiowa Park and others coming from south and west of town should go west on County Road P, and/or north on County Road 3, east on US 6/Central Avenue, then south on Main Street. Those coming from south and east of town should go north on Highway 52 and enter town going west on County Road Q or west on US 6/Central Avenue to Main Street. Please obey all construction signs and traffic signs, particularly speed limit signs. The intersection of Main Street and Central Avenue will be highly congested, so please plan accordingly.

The Town of Wiggins appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to improve our community's infrastructure. Drivers are reminded to slow down, avoid distractions, and exercise caution when traveling through the work zone.

Please direct any questions to the Town Manager, Craig Miller, at 970-483-6161.

*Dates are subject to change, depending upon weather conditions and any other unanticipated interruptions. We will provide advance notice as soon as possible.
