💡 Shining a Light on Community Service!

The Shine the Light Contest, sponsored by the Iowa Association of Electric Cooperatives, recognizes individuals who go above and beyond to make a difference in their communities.

Eastern Iowa REC is proud to recognize Emily Eichelberger, nominated by Sara Carlson, for her dedication to mental health awareness and advocacy.

Emily organizes an annual fundraiser to support local mental health programs, raising awareness and making a positive impact on others.

Eastern Iowa REC and CIPCO are proud to recognize Emily's efforts with a donation to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Greater Mississippi Valley chapter.

Thank you, Emily, for making a difference and shining your light in our community! 💙

Scammers want you to act before you have time to think. Before clicking a link in an email or text, stop and look closely. Is the message unexpected? Does the website address look legitimate? Is someone pressuring you to act immediately? When in doubt, go directly to the company’s official website or contact them using a trusted phone number—not the information provided in the suspicious message.

Safety Share Saturday!
❓Did you know that smoke and CO detectors expire? Many have long-life batteries that don’t need to be replaced every year, but they still need regular attention. Test and inspect alarms, and replace any that are broken or expired with a new 10-year sealed battery model.

Cooler temps are coming, which means your heating system will soon be working harder to keep your home comfortable. Fall is the perfect time to check for drafts around windows and doors––before cooler weather arrives. A little weatherstripping and caulk can help keep conditioned air indoors while improving efficiency and overall comfort.

Thanks to Governor Kim Reynolds for signing a proclamation declaring October as Cooperative Month to help celebrate the positive impact Iowa’s cooperative organizations have in the state.

Almost one in two Iowans belongs to a cooperative, whether in agriculture, energy, credit unions, telecommunications, farm credit, petroleum, or retail. Cooperatives are member-owned and member-governed, with boards of directors elected from within their membership. Unlike traditional businesses driven by outside investors, co-ops prioritize service to their members over profits.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is a great time to strengthen your online accounts. One of the easiest steps? Make your passwords longer. A long, unique passphrase can be harder for cybercriminals to crack than a short password packed with special characters. Choose something memorable but difficult for others to guess—and never reuse passwords across multiple accounts.
