Two teachers. Same passion. One well-deserved honor!

Tommy Sawyer brings endless enthusiasm and positivity. Cody Weadge brings dad jokes and a classroom philosophy summed up in two words: "Confusion Rocks."

Both teach social studies at Winona Middle School, love the Green Bay Packers and believe building relationships with students is just as important as the lessons they teach.

And now they share another distinction: They are the 2026 Winona Education Association Teachers of the Year!

The two were surprised with the honor Friday afternoon during a combined classroom activity at the middle school.

Together, they help make Winona Middle School a place where students feel welcomed, valued and excited to learn.

Congratulations to Tommy and Cody! Thank you for making a difference in the lives of our students every day.

Modern careers increasingly require employees to use specialized equipment, software and digital systems.

WAPS has worked with local businesses, higher-education partners and community members through the Forging a Future initiative to rebuild and reimagine Career and Technical Education.

The levy will support eligible CTE equipment, software, infrastructure, licenses, maintenance and training. This could help students explore pathways in manufacturing, engineering, construction, agriculture, business, family and consumer sciences and other fields.

Check out this video, made by our Tech Nest students, and visit winonaschools.org/levy to learn more.

We've got some cross country runners heading to the state meet!

The Winhawks boys placed second as a team to qualify as a team for the sixth year in a row. It is the 37th time either a boys or girls team will compete at state, and the 21st time the boys team did it.

Kedrick Boucek was the top boys finisher in 15:59.9 to claim the individual section title. Phineas Van Fossen was fourth, Quinn Wangberg was 14th and Peter Holey was 17th.

The girls finished one spot away from qualifying as a team, but will be sending three runners as individuals. Qualifying were: Izzy Katwa (6th place), Lauren Heltemes (10th) and Elsa Heinrichs (11th).

The state meet is next Saturday, Nov. 7 at Majestic Oaks Golf Club in Ham Lake.

DID YOU KNOW?

Winona Area Public Schools has some of the lowest school property taxes in the region.

According to the Pay 2026 School Tax Report, the school tax bill on a home valued at $250,000 in Winona is approximately $694 annually. That's lower than St. Charles, Caledonia, Wabasha-Kellogg, La Crescent-Hokah, Rushford-Peterson, Lewiston-Altura and Houston.

On Nov. 3, voters will decide whether to renew the district's Capital Projects Levy for another 10 years. The proposal would maintain the same voter-approved tax rate while providing additional funding for school safety, technology, cybersecurity and career-ready learning.

If approved, the estimated tax impact on a $250,000 home would be approximately $75 per year, an increase of $30 from the current levy. That would still land Winona behind six other districts in school taxes.

Learn more about the proposal, its financial impact and what the funding supports at winonaschools.org/levy.

Putting the "I" in KIND at Winona Middle School.

For Unity Day, our Winhawks at WMS celebrated kindness, inclusion, and the important role each of us plays in making our school a place where everyone belongs. The “I” in KIND reminds us that it starts with each of us. Through our words, actions, and choices, we can make a difference and help everyone feel welcomed, valued, and included.

Together, we stand united against bullying and choose kindness every day!
