Our Air Force Security Assistance and Cooperation (AFSAC) Directorate at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, celebrated a historic milestone on Oct. 27 with the dedication of 10 Japanese cherry blossom trees through the Operation 2000 Cherry Tree Project.

The trees honor more than a century of friendship between the United States and Japan, dating back to Japan’s 1912 gift of more than 3,000 cherry trees to America.

The ceremony brought together former Ohio Governor Bob Taft, Japanese diplomatic representatives, local leaders, military officials, and community partners to celebrate the enduring U.S.-Japan relationship.

The project, founded by Dayton businessman Alex Hara, was inspired by the outpouring of American support for Japan following the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami. (Photo 3, Hara is seen with the blue shovel. Former governor Taft is far left).

As AFSAC director Brig. Gen. Chris Clark shared, the newly planted trees represent a living testament to the bonds shared with our Japanese allies. (Photo 2)

Meet Caitlin Cox, a Foreign Affairs Specialist in our Air Force Security Assistance and Cooperation (AFSAC) directorate. 🌎

After handing a paper resume to an Air Force recruiter at a college job fair, she landed a spot in the PALACE Acquire (PAQ) internship program, and it kick-started her career in international diplomacy. In fact, she became the first international affairs PAQ at AFSAC - ever!

Here is what the PAQ program offers recent college graduates:

🔹 2-or-3-year paid developmental position
🔹Tuition assistance / funded graduate degree
🔹 Paid relocation expenses
🔹 Guaranteed promotion ladder (GS-7 up to GS-11/12)

Applications are open year-round to U.S. citizens who earned a bachelor’s or master’s degree within the past two years (with extended windows for veterans).

Community members and competitors participated in the 22nd annual Pumpkin Chuck on the grounds of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, Oct. 24, 2026. 🎃

Hosted annually by our Engineering Directorate, the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) event brings together engineering enthusiasts, families, and local community members for a day of hands-on learning and friendly competition.

Participants put engineering principles into action with various pumpkin-launching machines, while children explore physics, speed, and distance through interactive STEM activities.

Team Ethos won the Class A category. Ethos is a catapult team formed in 2006, and most members also work at Wright-Patt. This year, Ethos chucked a pumpkin 3,090 feet! (photo #5)

Troy Christian won the Class-B STEM category. (photo #6).
