This morning around 3 am, one of our deputies left a call after dropping off a citizen at a residence in the Terrace Heights area. As she was driving back toward Yakima on Terrace Heights Drive, a vehicle approached her from behind at a high rate of speed. While in the 3300 Blk of Terrace Heights Drive, the vehicle struck the rear end of her patrol vehicle. At the time, they were moving westbound, so she was about to pull over to check the circumstances.

Prior to her pulling over, the vehicle struck her again, causing it to jolt forward. She then realized this did not appear to be an accident. She advised dispatch to send additional units and to proceed with her emergency lights on in an attempt to create distance from being attacked.

As she sped up, the vehicle continued to pursue her at a high rate of speed and again struck her patrol vehicle from the rear.

As they entered the City Limits of Yakima and crossed the Yakima River bridge, the vehicle struck her again, causing her patrol vehicle to begin to slide. The vehicle struck the concrete barrier, and she regained control. The suspect vehicle continued to chase her. She pulled off to the side of the road at E. Yakima Ave and I-82 and exited her vehicle in a defensive position. The suspect’s vehicle then turned around and fled in the opposite direction.

The deputy’s patrol car was partially disabled due to the collisions.

The suspect vehicle was later located by Moxee PD and other deputies in the Terrace Heights area. The 20-year-old female suspect resisted arrest and struck one of the arresting officers in the face.

She was finally taken into custody and booked into Yakima County Jail. We are requesting charges of Assault 1st Degree (4 counts), Malicious Mischief 1st Degree, Hit and Run - Injury, and Assault 3rd Degree - Officer.

Having a little Halloween fun with Artificial Intelligence.

Please welcome Deputy Terry Dactyl! He is on loan from Jurassic Park PD. He will be here the whole month of October to help out and “patrol” terrain different from what he is used to. He will be assigned to Sgt. Perez’s crew in the Lower Valley. Sgt. Perez is a grizzled 20-year veteran deputy who is entirely unfazed by the fact that his partner is a dinosaur.

We have noticed some issues Deputy Dactyl needs to work out. His bodycam is practically useless. Because a pterodactyl's neck moves constantly and looks sideways, his bodycam footage is completely unusable. It’s just 90% blur, 5% sky, and 5% a close-up of a confused civilian’s face.

He is too large for the interview room. His wingspan completely pins the suspect against the wall just by him sitting down. When he tries to do "Bad Cop" and slam his hands on the table, he just accidentally destroys the furniture with his talons.

He cannot fit inside a standard police cruiser. Instead, he flies alongside it, or he rides a specialized, heavily reinforced motorcycle that he has to awkwardly pedal-launch into the air.

He is quite effective at stopping criminals from running away from us. He is like a new helicopter unit for us. He just opens his beak and lets out a blood-curdling, prehistoric screech that terrifies criminals (and nearby pedestrians) into compliance.

Instead of drawing a fi***rm, his version of "holding a suspect at gunpoint" is just hovering 10 feet in the air, casting a massive shadow, and staring unblinkingly with giant, predatory eyes.

Thank you for reading our attempt at some humor and fun. We hope it brings you a laugh or a smile to brighten your day.

A Flock success story.

Using a Flock automatic license plate reader (ALPR) helped us arrest a person with multiple outstanding warrants from three different agencies, including one related to a DUI case and one related to a 4th Degree Domestic Assault. Deputies responded to the area and initiated a traffic stop after verifying the identity of the suspect driver. The driver was arrested. We learned the person posted bail and committed another crime, Animal Cruelty. He has since crossed the border into Mexico and currently has four outstanding warrants.

This case highlights the importance of modern police investigation tools like ALPRs. They can provide additional leads and information during criminal investigations. ALPR use in public areas will be conducted in a legal and ethical manner while recognizing and protecting constitutional standards of privacy.

Today, we remember the two naval aviators who died on Oct. 15, 2024, when their EA-18G Growler crashed near Mount Rainier.

Lt. Cmdr. Lyndsay P. Evans, 31, a Naval Flight Officer from California.
Lt. Serena N. Wileman, 31, a Naval Aviator from California.

We thank them for their service and sacrifice to our country.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, and our office has not received any updates.

For a couple of days, the US Navy asked for our Search and Rescue team’s help to find the aircraft. Two ground crews navigated the mountainous terrain, cloudy weather, and low visibility to locate the crew and wreckage until the Navy’s resources were fully deployed to the area.

On 10/12/26 at around 9:30 am, the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office received multiple calls reporting a shooting in the 2200 block of Forsell Rd. Deputies and Officers from multiple agencies responded to the call.

Responding law enforcement, fire, and medical personnel, along with a medical helicopter, provided life saving efforts. The injured victim was airlifted from the scene and has undergone surgery for his injuries at a Central Washington hospital.
