Honouring the legacy of Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Honourable Thamsanqa Ntuli led the official opening of the 2 500 seater Mangosuthu Buthelezi Indoor Sports Centre, in Ulundi, on Friday 30 October 2026.

Founded by Dr Mangosuthu Buthelezi, Ulundi - which used to be a forest - is now a bustling economic area, providing essential services and employment to people from KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.

In building Ulundi, Dr Buthelezi revived history and heritage by resuscitating King Cetshwayo's palace which was destroyed during the 1879 Battle of Ulundi, between the English and the Zulus.

In his remarks, Premier Ntuli said the Indoor Sports revives the legacy of Dr Buthelezi and the heritage of the Zulu nation as represented by King Cetshwayo.

He said the centre will go a long way in forging a healthy lifestyle and keeping the busy with various sporting activities.

The Premier also urged the community to take care of the Mangosuthu Indoor Sports Centre, by safeguarding and protecting it from vandalism.

"If you destroy or vandalise this centre - you will not only be damaging it - but you will be ruining the legacy, heritage and bravery of the leaders and kings who paved the way for Ulundi to be what it is today," said Premier Ntuli.

Durban has done it. KwaZulu-Natal has done it. History has been made.

I am incredibly proud to congratulate the City of eThekwini, Durban, on being announced as the Preferred City to Bid for the 2036/40 Olympic & Paralympic Games.

This is not just a win for Durban - it is a win for KwaZulu-Natal, and a win for South Africa.

For years we have said Durban is a world-class city. Today, the world is listening. With the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium as our backdrop, we are ready to show the world who we are.

As Premier, I see what this bid means: Jobs for our people. Growth for our economy. Hope for our youth. And a chance to place KwaZulu-Natal on the global stage.

The road to 2036/40 starts now. As the Provincial Government, we will stand fully behind eThekwini Municipality every step of the way.

Let us dream together. Let us work together. Let us bring the Olympics home.

Congratulations Durban!
