The KwaZakhele Police Station has Been Without Electricity for Days

Statement by Retief Odendaal MPL - DA NMB Mayoral Candidate: The Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Municipality's failure to keep the lights on and deliver basic services is directly hampering the South African Police Service's (SAPS) ability to combat crime and fulfil its duties across the Metro. Yesterday, I conducted an oversight inspection at the KwaZakhele Police Station in Gqeberha with DA NMB Spokesperson for Safety and Security, Cllr Jason Grobbelaar, and DA Cllr Mthokozisi Nkosi....

Stop Pussyfooting Around Stolen Electricity

ACDP Councillor Lance Grootboom said last night; "We spend R7.8-billion buying power from Eskom, but we only recover R6.9-billion. You are draining the hard-earned money of honest, paying citizens to cross-subsidise lawlessness! It is pure administrative failure." He put it politely without pointing fingers at our present Lords (Ladies) and Masters. For once in your life I dare you to meaningfully engage with your staff - specifically those staff members in low paying menial jobs that stay in what we used to call the 'townships'!...

Illegal sand mining is a criminal offence

Statement by Dr Vicky Knoetze MPL - Shadow MEC for Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism: Recent heavy rains have again highlighted how exposed many Eastern Cape communities are when natural flood protection is degraded. Illegal sand mining worsens that risk. It strips sand from riverbanks, dunes, wetlands, and coastal areas, accelerates erosion, damages rural roads and river crossings, and leaves communities to carry the cost while criminal operators profit from stolen public resources....

Proposed 11% Electricity Tariff Hike Risks Jobs, Investment and Economic Growth 09/06/2026

Proposed 11% Electricity Tariff Hike Risks Jobs, Investment and Economic Growth

As a participant in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s 2026/27 electricity tariff consultation process, the Business Chamber analysed the proposed 11% average increase and submitted our formal response in this regard. In our submission, we highlighted that the Cost of Supply Study was defective and needed to be rectified and that the tariffs must be cost reflective. This resulted in amendments to the study and reductions to the tariffs but even with these adjustments the average 11% increase is still not cost reflective and remain too high for businesses and consumers to simply absorb, while at the same time there is no clear plan of action to address the inefficiencies relating to the distribution and supply of electricity as well as electricity infrastructure shortcomings....

A Budget That Punishes Residents

Statement by Cllr Brendon Pegram - DA NMB Spokesperson for Budget and Treasury: Why would anyone want to pay more for municipal services they are not receiving? That is exactly what the current ANC/EFF coalition in Nelson Mandela Bay is asking of residents and why the Democratic Alliance (DA) rejected the 2026/27 budget that was adopted in council today. The ANC/EFF Coalition of Chaos thinks the failing administration deserves more of our residents' hard-earned cash....
