A remarkable history and survives today through much work and passion. I learned that the square-riggers could hold more cargo that the steamers of the day because the steamers had to carry fuel, therefore the square-riggers were used well into the mid 20th century for carrying cargo.

🇦🇺 Australia’s Historic Tall Ship – James Craig

The James Craig, originally launched as Clan Macleod, was built in 1874 by Bartram, Haswell & Co. in Sunderland, England. She was renamed James Craig in 1905.

For 26 years, this magnificent sailing ship plied the world’s trade routes, carrying general cargo and completing an impressive 23 voyages around Cape Horn.

A remarkable survivor of the age of sail, the James Craig remains a proud reminder of Australia’s rich maritime heritage.

as an update- In Mar-Apr 2021 FALIE was tugged to Adelaide Ship Construction International for a hull clean and a paint. That was 5 1/2 years ago. FALIE is still on the slip. Being a worksite, visitors are restricted. ---- HOWEVER the team of volunteers have progressed well on preservation work on decks and structures with DIT's support, AND, the board of Historic Ketch Falie Inc, which was formed to support outreach and education projects, has revamped their website, developed online education resources, popup museum, pirate school workshops, whilst becoming a registered charity with tax-deductible gift status. ----- Anyone can get involved, it's something really worthwhile. ----- AS FOR THE FUTURE? We don't know, no news as yet. Most likely moved to Dock 2 as an exhibit. ------ FALIE has an interesting story - coastal trader, HMAS FALIE in Sydney and PNG, SA Flagship, Charters and sail training.
