FINAL DAYS // Graham Lupp 'Five Decades: Studies in Realism' closes this Sunday 1 November so don't miss your chance to view!
🕙 BRAG is open Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm & Saturday-Sunday 10am-2pm

Pictured here is Graham Lupp's 'Taroudannt Man', 2000

"This whimsical little gouache work was part of a series done between 1992 and 2012. I called the series 'The Meldings' because of the way I blended different images from my travels with local images, mostly old farm buildings or landscapes. This was my attempt to reconcile the excitement of travelling with the comfort of the surroundings I had grown up with. The results were often surreal with unsettling overtones. Here, the Hereford cow gives the Moroccan figure a quizzical look as he walks
away." - Graham Lupp

Final days of Nicole Welch's Mid-Career Survey at BRAG!
Set against enchanting pink walls are two works by Nicole from the series 'Infrared Land Works' - 'Yarrahapinni', 2019/20 in the guilded frame, and 'Transformation the prelude', 2018.

'Yarrahapinni', 2019/20, is a time-lapse film shot using infrared technology. The work was commissioned by the Manly Art Gallery & Museum in association with UNSW Water Research Laboratory, the film records the tidal flow into an estuary, symbolically referencing the rejuvenation and reawakening of a wetland environment. Welch sees it as an affirmative work that celebrates the capacity to rebuild fragile ecosystems. Framed within an antique gilded frame, 'Yarrahapinni' also references the history of 19th century Romantic landscape painting, drawing parallels across time.

'Transformation the prelude', 2018, was shot using infrared technology, a new departure in her work, the resulting hyperreal light spectrum and colours revealed are invisible to the human eye. Constructed from 1000 photographs, 'Transformation the prelude' captures a waterfall in lurid pink colours, held in a perpetual loop, flowing and then reversing, moving several times faster than it naturally would. Recorded in Northern NSW, the work presents a stark contrast with the intense drought which was devastating Central West New South Wales at the time it was made.

This is your final week to view Graham Lupp's 'Five Decades: Studies in Realism' at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery!

BRAG is open Tuesday-Friday 10am-5pm & Saturday-Sunday 10am-2pm

'Five decades' presents a small survey of personal work and invites us into the private collection of local artist Graham Lupp, providing a unique glimpse of studies made during formative moments and experiences of the artist’s life. The exhibition offers a beautiful journey of reflection, retrospection and poignant perspectives, celebrating vulnerability and wisdom across five decades of practice.

Realism has always been central to Lupp’s work, starting in the 70s as an art student in London and has evolved through the years as playful encounters. Extensive travel in the 90s inspired a new aesthetic — blending images of new experiences overseas with more familiar subjects, mostly landscapes, derived from the Bathurst region. Apart from years of studying architecture in Sydney and fine art in London, Lupp has lived continuously in his hometown of Bathurst and developed a lifelong passion for the landscape of the district and has dedicated himself to its meticulous study. In later years this aesthetic has slowly given way to a more expressive approach, in an endeavour to understand the sublime through a deep-seated emotional connection to a childhood spent in the Australian bush.

'Five decades' is a journey through practice, viewed from a vantage point of five decades. Many of these studies have led to larger paintings now held in major public and private collections, but for Lupp these studies are of the greatest value.

FINAL WEEKS // 'Transformations: Image, Time & Landscape | Nicole Welch: A Mid-Career Survey' curated by Richard Perram OAM.

Welch’s early works (1999-2007) are based around printmaking and hark back to 19th century Victorian social practices. Her beaded books, linocuts, printed fabrics and pin prick light boxes recall small-scale domestic handiwork that was undertaken in ‘polite society’, usually by women.
