What athletes do off the field of play can be just as important as what occurs on it for their long-term brain health.

New AIS guidelines highlight the everyday factors that can influence brain health throughout an athlete’s life, alongside continued efforts to prevent and manage concussion and repeated head impacts.

For athletes, it’s a message of hope and agency: future brain health is not predetermined by events of the past and can be influenced by simple lifestyle decisions during sporting careers and long after athletes finish competing.

The Restorative Program was established to recognise and respond to former Australian Institute of Sport scholarship athletes from 1981 to 2013 who experienced harm from inappropriate practices or abuse during their time at the AIS.

With the program closing to new applications on 31 December 2026, former AIS scholarship athletes who are considering participating are encouraged to learn more about the restorative process.

The ASC is committed to providing meaningful acknowledgement, care and support to these athletes. Insights and learnings from the program will continue to inform future practices both within the ASC and across Australian sport.

Applications received or underway by 31 December 2026 will continue to be supported through to completion.
