Dubbo Regional Council has reminded residents to bring batteries to the appropriate recycling facilites after the second garbage truck fire this year believed to be caused by discarded batteries.

The truck was on domestic collection run along Dalton Street in South Dubbo around 11am on Friday when the driver noticed smoke coming from the back of the vehicle.

The load was dumped and NSW Fire and Rescue were able to extinguish the blaze.

In July a similar incident occured on Lonsdale Road, Minore.

Dubbo Regional Council Director of Development and Environment Steven Jennings says “Council has a free recycling program for embedded battery devices and household batteries at Whylandra Waste and Recycling Facility or the Wellington Transfer Station."

Prohibited items that cannot be disposed of in household bins include:
❌ lithium-ion batteries
❌ rechargeable batteries
❌ embedded battery devices
❌ petrol
❌ paint thinners
❌ gas cylinders that are either full or empty

🔥 | Fire pits and chimney smoke!

Winter has arrived and locals are starting to use wood heaters or recreational fire pits. During the cooler months smoke will be present in the community from wood heaters and fire pits, however everyone can do their part to help keep air quality cleaner with these tips.

👍 Use dry, untreated wood in your wood heater or fire pit.
🧹 Be prepared and get your chimney cleaned.
🌙 Don’t let a fire smoulder overnight.
🪵 When using a wood heater ensure the air flue is open.
🍃 If you have green waste, please use your green-lid bin to dispose of it, do not burn it.

Smoke from wood heaters and recreational fire pits can cause breathing difficulties for vulnerable residents especially people prone to respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Enjoy your recreational fire pit or wood heaters responsibly and minimise smoke to ensure everyone can breathe easier this winter.
