🚙 FOUR WHEEL DRIVE TRAINING

Over the weekend, Dubbo Unit hosted a Four Wheel Drive Operations course. With many national parks, reserves and offroad access trails in the area, training like this is critical to ensuring we can safely reach people if a call for help is received - especially if it's been raining! 8 members from Dubbo, Wellington and Warren units are now better prepared to respond to the next request for assistance, even if it's a little off the beaten track. ⛰️

We would also like to extend a big thank you to trainers from Bathurst and Coonamble who gave up their weekend to help train our volunteers and share their knowledge. From experienced off-roaders to people driving a four wheel drive vehicle for the first time, everyone learns something new from courses like these.

🛞 Ready to get behind the wheel of a rewarding volunteering journey? You can find out more at https://www.ses.nsw.gov.au/volunteer or send us a message!

Note: NSW SES has permission to use certain locations for training purposes only, as they are realistic locations where we may conduct rescue operations. If you are four wheel driving in the local area, please be mindful of signposted restrictions and always consider environmental protection before entering any track.

Dubbo Unit has received delivery of a brand new High Clearance Vehicle (HCV)! 🚚

The HCV provides extreme off-road performance and can operate in water up to 1.2 metres deep, meaning it can conduct flood rescues, flood operations and logistical support tasks in diverse and challenging environments. It can also support the community in other response capabilities, such as search and rescue operations.

This is a fantastic capability boost for the communities of Dubbo and surrounds.

You can read more about this capability boost at

Flood rescue capability and emergency response in the Central West has been strengthened with the delivery of a brand-new Generation Five High Clearance Vehicle (HCV) to NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Dubbo Unit.

🚤 Flood Boat Training & River Assessment

Throughout the week, some of our dedicated members headed out on the water to refresh their floodboat skills and assess current river conditions and the navigability of local waterways.

Maintaining strong operational skills and up‑to‑date knowledge of our rivers is essential as we move closer to storm season. These proactive checks help ensure our crews are ready to respond safely and effectively when the community needs us most.

Thank you to our volunteers for their ongoing dedication to community safety.

🛑 SES Safety Reminder – Storms & Flooding
As we head into storm season, please remember:

Never drive through floodwater — if it’s flooded, forget it.

Stay clear of swollen rivers, fast‑moving water, and damaged riverbanks.

Secure outdoor items before storms and move vehicles undercover where possible.

Avoid walking or playing near drains, creeks, or stormwater channels during heavy rain.

Report life‑threatening emergencies to 000.

For storm and flood assistance, call the SES on 132 500.

🟠 Storm Damage Training Update – Dubbo Unit
This week our members practiced sandbagging and pumping as part of our ongoing storm damage skills maintenance. The session provided a valuable leadership opportunity for our experienced members, who had the chance to take charge of a team to achieve a common goal, while giving our new members a strong head start before they undertake a more comprehensive storm damage course in the coming weeks.

💪 Sandbagging is a key storm response skill used to divert water and help protect homes and property during heavy rain and flooding.

💧 Pumping Members refreshed their skills in safely operating portable pumps to remove excess water from properties and storm-affected areas, helping prevent further damage after severe weather.

Thank you to all members for your continued commitment to keeping our community safe.

🛑 NSW SES Safety Reminder As we move towards storm season, please remember:
• Never drive through floodwater — if it’s flooded, forget it.
• Keep clear of fallen trees, damaged roofs, and powerlines.
• Supervise children and pets around storm affected areas.
• Report life-threatening emergencies to 000.
• For assistance with storm or flood damage, call SES on 132 500.
