A couple more sleeps until Movember, and our CEO Rob is getting ready to grow a Mo! 🥸

Rob was inspired by his son, who shaved his head for the World’s Greatest Shave, so he’s stepping up to support men’s health too. Every dollar goes towards men’s mental health and su***de prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

It connects to our mission, too. A safe, stable home is the foundation for good mental health, and that’s why we work to get veterans into housing.

Our founder William L. Hawkins was sent here to recover in 1918, and it's here he met the "Lady with the Lamp" — a Night Sister whose calm and courage during a terrifying air raid stayed with him for the rest of his life.

Four days stuck in the mud near Ypres. No relief in sight. Not a smoke left in the whole platoon. 😔

Then, out of the dark, a ration party quietly handed over a small packet meant for just one man — and it lifted the spirits of the entire platoon.

🎉 We are delighted to announce that our grant application to the ANZAC Day Proceeds Fund has been successful. The fund is supported by the Victorian Veterans Council in partnership with the Victorian Government. 🤝

🏅 We were one of just 15 ex-service organisations to receive funding.

🏠 This vital funding will allow us to provide crisis accommodation and support to veterans who have fallen on hard times. 🧡

Housing is a human right, not a luxury. 🏠

This World Homelessness Day, we're reflecting on our impact. So far this year, VHA has delivered 29,559 nights of shelter for veterans, and answered 300 requests for help. Last year, we provided 37,292 nights of safe accommodation to veterans and their families, up from around 36,000 the year before. But there's still so much more to do.

What began as a goal of 100,000 safe nights has grown into a strategy to deliver 350,000 safe nights by 2035. Our focus is simple: every veteran deserves a safe place to sleep.

None of this would be possible without our philanthropists, corporate partners, and individual donors. Together, we're working toward a future without veteran homelessness.

"Home is your safe place to decompress."

It's a simple line, but for the veterans who struggle after service, it carries real weight. Home isn't a luxury, it's where recovery can begin, where identity is rebuilt, and where life has room to move from surviving to thriving.

As we head into World Homelessness Day tomorrow, this is the reminder we want to lead with: behind every statistic on veteran homelessness is a person who deserves exactly that, a safe place to decompress, and the chance to thrive.

We're so proud of our Board members! 💛

Captain David McCourt, DSM, OAM, RAN (retired) and Lieutenant Commander Tamara Sloper-Harding, OAM, RAN (retired) have been honoured by Timor-Leste's President and Nobel Peace Laureate José Ramos-Horta. They received the Order of Timor-Leste, the nation's highest honour, along with the Medal "Solidarity of Timor-Leste".

Both played pivotal roles in the 1999 INTERFET mission, and both have kept giving ever since. David led a UN observer team supporting vaccinations and cyclone relief. Tamara founded Friends Of Soibada, which supports the Soibada community to this day.

President Ramos-Horta said they "stood with us in our darkest hours and remained with us in the long journey of nation-building."

We're lucky to have you both on the Veteran Housing Australia Board.
