☕ NSW GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES CHANGES TO TAKEAWAY COFFEE CUPS
The NSW Government has announced new reforms aimed at reducing plastic waste, with changes to be introduced gradually following extensive industry consultation.
For our local cafés, hospitality venues and takeaway businesses, here’s what you need to know:
☕ Takeaway coffee cups are NOT being banned!
From 2028, single-use takeaway coffee cups will need to be recyclable, helping reduce waste going to landfill.
🍵 Changes for dine-in customers
From 2028, cafés will be required to offer customers a reusable mug or glass when dining in, rather than a disposable cup.
♻️ Bring your own keep cup
Cafés will also be required to accept customers’ reusable takeaway cups, provided they are clean and hygienic.
🥤 Voluntary reusable cup schemes
The reforms will support reusable cup programs that allow customers to borrow and return keep cups. Importantly, these schemes will NOT be mandatory for small businesses.
💬 What does this mean for local businesses?
While the changes won’t commence until 2028, it’s important that our hospitality operators have adequate time to prepare and understand their obligations.
The Shoalhaven Business Chamber will continue to advocate for practical, affordable and achievable reforms that consider the operational realities of small businesses.
We encourage our hospitality members to familiarise themselves with the proposed changes and share any concerns or questions with the Chamber.
