Honouring the women who strengthen rural communities
Today we honour the thousands of rural women who are the heart of Victoria’s regional communities.
A day held annually on 15 October, International Day of Rural Women is an important occasion to acknowledge and celebrate the vital contributions that women make on the land, and in their communities.
CFA recognises the dedication of its nearly 13,000 women members, many of whom are juggling their farming life and frontline life, agriculture, food security and rural development. They contribute as farmers, business owners, leaders, caregivers and volunteers. They also mentor young people, support local schools and care for family and neighbours, ensuring rural communities remain vibrant, connected and resilient.
The year 2026 is also designated by the United Nations as the International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF), making this year's observance particularly significant for highlighting gender equality in agrifood systems. CFA’s connection to this is strong in our regional areas, with many volunteers and brigades spread across Victoria’s agricultural landscape.
As executive sponsor for this important day, I carry the personal commitment to foster an environment where every woman feels seen, supported and empowered. Recognising and celebrating the contributions of women should be a year-round commitment for both CFA and the wider community.
CFA has a range of women’s network groups and committees across the state including the Women’s Advisory Committee. I encourage our CFA women to join these networks which are a safe space for women to feel supported by other women. These groups are inclusive, fair and helping create pathways for future women leaders.
It’s inspiring to see several women leaders in our organisation. CFA is creating history with many women being elected as brigade captains for the first time, as we saw recently with Strathbogie Fire Brigade’s Dana Last. I hope the work CFA is continuously doing will empower and encourage more women to strive for the same goal.
I encourage our members read the CFA Gender Equality Action Plan 2021-2025 and work to implement this into your every day lives.
CFA’s Women’s Challenge Camps are also a great way to build women’s networking across the organisation. They help build confidence, strategies and leadership in a welcoming environment. Many of our women have made lifelong friendships and connections as a result of these camps.
Thank you to all the women in CFA. Your ongoing dedication, strength, resilience and courage is inspiring. Your unwavering commitment to protecting lives and properties is appreciated every day.
