October, wrapped.

Lion dances, muddy boots, a bunch of kilometres on bikes, and a lot of people learning what to do when it counts.

Thanks for having us!

Communities across NSW are getting behind it, and it doesn’t matter if you’re 8 or 80. Everyone has a part to play in helping more people survive cardiac arrest.

Our Shocktober goal is to get 5,000 more people trained in CPR and first aid, and put 500 more AEDs in NSW workplaces and communities.

How are you going to help Change the Odds?

Share this post, tag someone who’s changing the odds with you, and pass it on.

Do you know where the nearest AED is, at work, at the gym, or around your neighbourhood?

This Shocktober, we’ve challenged NSW to help us get 500 new AEDs into the community to Change the Odds of surviving a sudden cardiac arrest.

To help make that happen, we’ve got $450 OFF St John G5 Defibrillators, but not for long. Offer ends Saturday 31 October!

Don’t miss out 👇

He had the CPR skills. He had a defibrillator. And when the call came, he was ready to act.

Recently, St John NSW volunteer Chaplain and EMT Paul McFarlane responded to a cardiac arrest through the GoodSAM app.

He arrived before the ambulance, performed CPR, and delivered several shocks using a defibrillator he had personally purchased for his family.

Sadly, not every cardiac arrest has a positive outcome. But Paul's experience is a powerful reminder of why lifesaving equipment needs to be close enough to use – and why having the skills to act matters just as much.

That's what Shocktober is all about.

This October, we're challenging NSW to get 5,000 people trained and put 500 more defibrillators within reach.

Get trained. Get equipped. Help change the odds.

The St John Pocket AED is a defibrillator you can carry with you, so help isn’t limited to wherever the nearest public AED happens to be.

Fun fact: the Bee Gees' 'Stayin' Alive' (approximately 100 beats per minute) or 'Baby Shark' (approximately 120 bpm) has almost exactly the right beat for CPR compressions. Play it, sing it, hum it, use it.

Better yet, learn CPR properly with our trainers. Book in October for 10% off First Aid and CPR training: https://stjohnnsw.com.au/change-the-odds/
Then equip yourself with $450 off the G5 AED or purchase a Pocket AED and get a free Patch 'n' Go kit.

We need your help! We're halfway through Shocktober, but not even at halfway to our Change the Odds Challenge goals!

So far, 1,721 people have committed to learning CPR by booking in for training, out of our goal of 5,000. And just 81 new AEDs have found a home in the community, more than 400 short of our 500 goal.

When CPR and an AED are used within the first 3 to 5 minutes of cardiac arrest, survival can reach as high as 70%. The more people who know CPR, and the more AEDs nearby, the shorter the wait for help. That's how we Change the Odds.

To help you get started, until 31 October there's 10% off First Aid and CPR training, up to $450 off G5 AEDs, and a free Patch n Go Kit with every Pocket AED.

Restart a Heart Day is a global initiative to raise awareness of cardiac arrest and educate communities on how to do CPR and use an AED. Because what happens in the first few minutes matters most: when CPR and an AED are used within 3–5 minutes of collapse, survival rates can jump to as high as 70%.

This October, we challenged NSW to help us Change the Odds: get at least 5,000 people CPR trained and put 500 new AEDs into the community.

We're officially halfway through Shocktober, so here's how we're tracking since 1 October:
1,688 of 5,000 people trained
71 of 500 new AEDs in the community

Thank you to everyone who's already stepped up. You're helping more people in NSW who experience a cardiac arrest get CPR and an AED within minutes, giving them the best chance of survival until paramedics arrive.

With just over two weeks left, there's still time to make a difference. Will you help change the odds?

Get trained. Get equipped. Be ready.

Until 31 October:
10% off CPR and First Aid training
$450 OFF St John G5 AEDs
Free Patch 'n' Go with a Pocket AED purchase
