Our Year 9 Geography students recently took their learning beyond the classroom with an engaging excursion to the Port of Townsville and our local airport. The day provided a valuable opportunity for students to see how the concepts studied in classโparticularly interconnectionsโoperate in real-world settings.
At both locations, students were treated to informative presentations and guided tours of the facilities. These sessions helped them understand how goods, services, and people move across regions and around the world. From shipping operations at the port to passenger and cargo logistics at the airport, students gained insight into the complex systems that keep global networks functioning.
One of the standout highlights of the day was the tour of the airportโs international terminal. Students were given a behind-the-scenes look at how international travel operates, deepening their appreciation of global mobility and trade. Equally memorable was the airside bus tour, where students witnessed a police helicopter taking off right in front of themโan exciting moment made even more special when the pilot waved as they lifted into the sky.
Our students really loved the day:
๐ฃโIt was really noisy at the airport, but that made it feel exciting and real.โ - Advik
๐ฃโIt was so cool seeing the helicopter take off right in front of us!โ - Sebastian
๐ฃโIt was fun and interestingโ - Lil Wayne
๐ฃโGetting a photo with the plane on the tarmac was awesome.โ -Roxine
๐ฃโWatching the ship being unloaded of mineral concentrate straight into a truck was really interesting.โ -Ishmael
๐ฃโIt was good to see how goods and people move around in real lifeโit made everything we learned make sense.โ- Khanh
Thank you so much to Mrs Bales who organised the trip, as well as to Ms Mills who helped supervise the excursion.
What a great experience for our geographers!
