The Fredericton Homeless Shelters provide shelter services and programming to those experiencing homelessness in the Fredericton area through our continuum of care model.

Reflecting on their hands and their journey, they shared that their hands “have been through a lot.”
For them, “Healing is putting faith in a new adventure omitting the past trauma.” Home means safety, and during difficult times, their kids and grandson give them strength.
When reflecting on strengths they have discovered in themselves, they shared “Strengths… I found my inner strength again… that was taken away from me. I can do it… I can do pretty much anything by myself. Fresh out of jail and now got my own place, dog back.”
Their journey has also shown them that “doesn’t matter what we face, you can overcome it.” When thinking of what gives them hope, they shared “future”.

Spooky Scoops at St. John House! 👻

Our St. John House Transition Planner and Manager treated residents to a fun Friday filled with ice cream sundaes, a movie, and some Halloween spirit! 🎬🍨

Sometimes it’s the simplest moments that bring people together, create connections, and make someone’s day a little brighter. 🎃

“Home is not just a house. It is more along the lines of family and who you can trust as a person…the ones that are more close to you…it’s more home than just a house or wherever you are.” During difficult times, they find strength “to carry on. For me it would generally be that I’ve got a future to look into…a brighter future. Music is another think, but I’ve got a little girl who is on the way too, so it makes me more happy in life and it’s got meaning behind it.”
Reflecting on their strength, they shared, “This is a really hard topic. I was adopted at the age six but because I was adopted, I intended to break the chain. What got me is when I was adopted, I was like you know what ‘it’s time to make a change’ and go from there and just be who I am to this day. Live my life to the fullest and not back down or stand my ground. Life is what you make it.”
“Healing...is that when you have what it takes to carry on when you’re in a dark time. I’ve healed myself multiple times…I just kept on going. I don’t stop.”
Reflecting on their hands and what they mean about their journey, they shared, “My hands show a story of who I truly am. I’m not a mean guy, but… I have a caring heart. The touching hand that’s always there for people who need me. I’ve just got kindness in me.”

Reflecting on their hands and their journey, they shared, “It’s been a long road. They’ve taken a few hits. They’re well worn.” For them, healing to them means: “getting me back…finding out underneath all of this…who [I] am…rebuilding. I’m doing it for myself. My inspiration is to reconcile a healthy relationship with my family, however that looks.” During difficult times, they find strength in God. They have discovered strength through saying “I always say that I got this or I’ll figure it out. That’s pride. It’s arrogance. It’s ego. It’s…come to find out I don’t have it. I’ll get it, that’s my journey.”
Hope is knowing “that there is still something I can do with whatever time that I have left.”
Reflecting on where they are today, they shared, “For the first time, maybe ever I feel like I’m where I’m supposed to be. I think…I believe. I had to break; I had to lose everything. I had to fall flat on my ass. I’m blessed it was here in Fredericton since I came to St John House, I’ve gotten a great team of people that generally care. I think only because I broke, that I was actually open to accepting help as opposed to, I’ll figure it out. I am blessed for everybody that is here that is helping to rebuild my mind…body…spirit. I’m grateful.”

When thinking of their future home, they shared “it could be anywhere, I could move anywhere as long as I have the funding to have that apartment or house or whatever I need.”
During difficult times, they find strength in “the Bible…I go to the Bible every once in a while, and I read it. I go to church too, and that helps.” On their journey, they shared it’s important to “not tolerate other people’s nonsense, but it’s got to work on that yourself.”
Hope to them means “waking up every day, having a roof over my head, my brothers and my sisters.” Healing on their journey means “time to yourself… emotional scars or physical scars can change every now and then.”
Reflecting on their hands and their journey, they shared: “when I was younger, I boxed and I had to wrap my hands. My hands pretty much say what I have been touching, what I haven’t been touching, the sense of feeling…sense of knowing where I am.”
“My hands would probably say “I’m lucky, I guess. Lucky to be here today. Lucky to be at the places I’ve been to and seen what I saw.”

“Home is where the heart is.” During difficult times, they “think about my son. That is why I would never give up on anything. That’s why I’ve never attempted killing myself or anything, because I don’t want him to say that I took the easy way up… it’s worth fighting for… we might as well do it.”
Within themselves, they have found the strength in painting and “I have an inner strength, I guess. I have a voice to be reckoned with.”
“Well, I’ve been through hell and back, I guess. We have to be hopeful that it will stop being hell.” Healing to them means: “just bettering myself as a person…contribute something to society like getting a job and working instead of doing what I’ve been doing for the last 30 years. I don’t want to hustle anymore. I want to work. When I could be thinking about my future and what I’m doing to leave for my child. I can’t do that… doing what I’ve been doing.”

Home to them means: “being safe, being secure, being stable.” During difficult times, they find strength in God, and their faith. When looking within and their strengths within, they shared they have discovered “I have the ability to change.”
When reflecting on their journey, they shared their hands would say “I haven’t been pampered and that I’m hardworking. That I’m quite capable and able.”
“Healing means peace. Healing means possibilities, sobriety and family.”
Hope to them means: “seeing the journey that I’ve come on and seeing where I was and that people can change…things can change, circumstances can change. You need to be proactive in it but seeing my own journey shows me that anything is possible when I get riled up about a little something that seems so big in the moment. Then I realize, God’s brought me through a whole lot worse and a whole lot more so I can handle a lot more than what I give myself credit for.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit yet, we encourage you to take some time to explore this special project, which shares powerful stories of resilience, strength, hope, and the unique journeys of individuals in our community. 💙

We also want to extend a big thank you to the Fredericton Public Library for their wonderful support and partnership in bringing this project to life. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to share these meaningful stories in such a welcoming community space.

When asked what home means to them, they shared “safety, comfort.” For them, healing is closely connected to their journey: “healing for me is my recovery.”
During hard times, their kids and working on their business gives them strength. When asked what gives them hope, they shared, “waking up every day and just being able to, you know, continue to work on my business and moving forward and working on my recovery and stuff. That’s a huge hope.”
Reflecting on what their hands have been through and what they represent, they shared “my hands, well they’ve seen some pretty rough times, I guess.” Their hands would tell them to “keep going the way that I have been, and to not give up.”
