A look at the bigger picture.🛠️

This week, our staff had the opportunity to spend some time together visiting the Halifax Infirmary Expansion Project and seeing firsthand the work taking place on site.

It was a great opportunity to learn more about the project, recognize the work and people bringing it to life, and reflect on how the different pieces of the workforce come together. 🏗️

From the skilled trades professionals doing the work on site to the training, recruitment and additional supports that help make it possible, there is a lot happening behind the scenes and across our partnerships.

What makes it especially meaningful is knowing the impact this project will have on our communities, including our own families, friends and loved ones. ❤️

Thanks to Build Nova Scotia and PCL Construction for making this happen.

Wonderful to see Lori and our skilled tradespeople being recognized during National Skilled Trades and Technology Week! 👏 Their skills, dedication and hard work are helping build a stronger future for healthcare in Cape Breton. We love seeing the collaboration, partnerships and opportunities that bring people together to make such meaningful projects possible. Congratulations to Lori and everyone involved!🎉🏗️

During Skilled Trades and Technology Week, we celebrate our skilled tradespeople on the Cape Breton healthcare projects.

People from across Cape Breton will benefit from their skills and hard work, as these facilities begin opening their doors.

The vast majority of tradespeople working on the projects are from Nova Scotia.

“These projects demonstrate the skill and capacity of our local workforce while providing meaningful employment close to home. Our skilled tradespeople are building healthcare facilities that their own families, neighbours and communities will rely on for generations. That’s something we take tremendous pride in,” says Ernie Dalton, President, Cape Breton Building Trades.

Meet Lori Borgal, a Red Seal plumber working on the new Northside health and long-term care centre. She appreciates the support from Women Unlimited that became a turning point in her life, and giving her the opportunity to build her career close to home.

NSCSC is often called the “help desk” of the industry. We help connect industry partners with the people, resources and opportunities they need to succeed. Sometimes, that means connecting others with the support they need—and sometimes, it means seeing our own industry partners step up to help.

When APTEC needed a space for four days of safety training, IBEW Local 1852 Business Manager Brad Lannon and his team stepped in, and provided the facility. This is what a connected industry looks like: partners working together and supporting one another to help build a safer, stronger workforce.

We were glad to help make that connection and visit participants during their training. A big thank you to Brad Lannon and the IBEW Local 1852 team for opening their doors and demonstrating the value of partnership! 👏

A morning worth celebrating! 👏

At the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency AGM, 2 participants from our Enhanced Direct Entry programs took the stage to share their experiences and journeys.

Through our Enhanced Direct Entry programs, participants accumulate apprenticeship hours as part of their training, and once they secure employment, we support them in registering as apprentices. Seeing our participants share their experiences with industry partners was a great opportunity to showcase how training and industry collaboration come together to support pathways into the skilled trades.

Thank you to our participants for sharing their stories and to our industry partners for their continued support! 🤝

🔨 Trades in Action at South Queens Middle School

What does it look like to introduce students to the world of skilled trades? It looks like getting hands-on learning directly from industry professionals, and discovering just how many possibilities are out there! 🛠️

Mobile Construction Experience (MCE) brought skilled trades professionals to South Queens Middle School to lead hands-on booths, giving students the opportunity to explore different trades and get a closer look at the work involved.

Representation matters, too! Women trades professionals led several of the booths, giving students the opportunity to learn from women working in the industry and see firsthand the diverse people who are helping shape the skilled trades.

Sometimes, seeing a trade up close is the first step toward imagining yourself in it.✨
