October is Circular Economy Month! ♻️🌎🌱 A circular economy is a more sustainable system where materials are kept in use for as long as possible. This could look like repairing instead of replacing, sharing instead of buying, or recycling and composting!

Fall is a perfect time to start composting, and to help you get started, we're giving away a backyard compost bin to one lucky winner! Like this post, follow us, and comment below why you want to start composting for an entry and chance to win! Don't forget, we have tons of educational materials on our website and offer composting workshops for beginners! Giveaway ends November 1st.

Here are some quick facts:

♻️The City of Winnipeg’s own Community Energy and Investment Roadmap calculates the share of current emissions generated by waste at 6% of total emissions. The roadmap identifies waste diversion as a net cost-saving action (–$126/tonne of CO2e) — cheaper than the building retrofits and heat pump conversions that make up the bulk of the city’s $23-billion climate plan.

♻️Winnipeggers already pay to bury food scraps that make up 44% of the waste stream — the Green Cart turns that buried cost into usable compost.
The cost is a gradual phase-in, from $8/year to $96/year by 2030, in l ine with what other Prairie cities already charge for the same service.

♻️Garbage pickup can move to every two weeks once organics collection starts, offsetting much of the new program's cost.

♻️Every tonne of food waste diverted is one less tonne feeding Brady Rd. Landfill’s methane management system that Winnipeg already spent $11 million to build and expand.

♻️In Winnipeg's own pilot, 66% of participants said they'd pay more to keep the program going — after actually using it.

Integrating city-wide composting in Winnipeg is a no-brainer. Where do your municipal candidates stand on making composting part of our city's climate future? 🌱
