It was a full and memorable day of the event Under the Canopy of Cairo’s Domes at MASQ Multicultural and Artistic Spaces at Qaitbey’s.

It began with the guided walking tour led by Agnieszka Dobrowolska, Director of ARCHiNOS, followed by The Domes of Cairo, a lecture by Jarosław Dobrowolski. The lecture traced the development of domes in Cairo across different historical periods, exploring their evolution in form, construction, and meaning.

The programme continued with the Sultan Fair, handicraft bazaar and the exhibition Domes and Trees in Blossom by Khalid Abdelrahman at CRAFTASTIC Art Gallery. The day concluded with a live acoustic performance by Street 9, a Sudanese band presenting a fusion of funk, jazz and Sudanese songs and melodies. It was a memorable day.

كان يوماً حافلاً ومميزاً ضمن فعالية «تحت ظلال قباب القاهرة» في مساحات قايتباي.

بدأ اليوم بجولة تمشية إرشادية قادتها أجنيشكا دوبروفولسكا، مديرة آركينوس للعمارة، تلتها محاضرة «قباب القاهرة» التي قدمها ياروسلاف دوبروفولسكي. تناولت المحاضرة تطور القباب في القاهرة عبر الفترات التاريخية المختلفة، واستعرضت تحولات أشكالها وأساليب بنائها ودلالاتها المعمارية والثقافية.

واستمر البرنامج مع «بازار السلطان» للحرف اليدوية، ومعرض «قباب وأشجار بوينسيانا» للفنان السوداني خالد عبدالرحمن في قاعة كرافتاستك لللفنون المعاصرة. واختُتم اليوم بحفل موسيقي حي لفرقة" سترييت ٩" السودانية، التي قدمت مزيجاً من موسيقى الفانك والجاز والأغاني والألحان السودانية. وكان يوماً لا يُنسى.

Meet the Artist | Khalid Abdelrahman

Khalid Abdelrahman is a self-taught artist born in Khartoum in 1978. He uses the traditional mediums of drawing and painting to express his artistic ideas through depicting landscapes, urban landscapes and architectural details. He exhibited extensively across Africa, Europe, and the United States.

Join us for the opening of *Domes and Trees in Blossom* at CRAFTASTIC! Art Gallery, MASQ, a new series inspired by the domes of Cairo’s “City of the Dead”. All artworks are available for purchase, with proceeds supporting the Sultan Foundation’s development initiatives in the Qaitbey neighbourhood.

تعرّف على الفنان | خالد عبد الرحمن

خالد عبد الرحمن هو فنان تشكيلي وُلد في الخرطوم عام 1978. يستخدم وسائط الرسم والتصوير التقليدية للتعبير عن أفكاره الفنية من خلال تصوير المناظر الطبيعية، والمشاهد الحضرية، والتفاصيل المعمارية. وقد عرض أعماله على نطاق واسع في أفريقيا وأوروبا والولايات المتحدة.

ندعوكم لحضور افتتاح معرض "قباب وأشجار بوينسيانا" في جاليري كرافتاستك!، بمساحات قايتباي، وهو سلسلة جديدة مستوحاة من قباب «القرافة الشمالية» في القاهرة.

Handcrafts Bazaar

A lively open-air bazaar bringing together Egyptian and Sudanese crafts, handmade products, and local producers, with strong participation from the Qaitbey community.

The fair showcases a curated selection of handcrafts by invited Egyptian and Sudanese artisans, including MISHKĀ products crafted by women from the Qaitbey neighbourhood. The event supports local economy while celebrating shared cultural practices.

Jarosław Dobrowolski is a conservation architect, researcher, and illustrator for whom Cairo has been home for more than thirty years. He is Research and Development Officer and partner at ARCHiNOS Architecture. His work has included extensive involvement in architectural conservation projects across Egypt with various international institutions, including a long history of work in the “City of the Dead”.

The lecture will present the development of domes in Cairo, tracing their evolution in form, construction, and meaning across different historical periods. The talk examines continuity and change in the art of dome construction and decoration that became a hallmark of Cairo, with various foreign influences contributing to indigenous, distinctly local development.

The lecture is part of the full-day programme “Under the Canopy of Cairo’s Domes”, at MASQ, including a bazaar, a walking tour, exhibition opening, and live music. The programme is supported by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation.
