How do you develop a regional response to climate mobility that truly reflects Pacific priorities?

Through years of dialogue, consultation and collaboration, Pacific governments, communities, civil society, faith leaders, youth representatives and regional partners came together to develop the Pacific Regional Framework on Climate Mobility.

🇫🇯🇻🇺 Sharing Experiences, Strengthening Solutions: Fiji and Vanuatu Exchange Lessons on Planned Relocation

🏘️ Last week, participants in the Fiji-Vanuatu Peer-to-Peer Exchange on Planned Relocation visited Nguna Island, where they learned firsthand how communities are responding to the growing impacts of climate change through locally led adaptation initiatives.

🌿 In Vanuatap Village, delegates met with key farmer John Kalman, who shared insights on strengthening food security through sustainable farming practices and community-led solutions. Participants visited the Nguna-Pele area council nursery and multiplication plots and exchanged knowledge on building resilience through climate-smart agriculture.

🫂 The delegation also engaged with local women's groups to learn about food preservation, sustainable livelihoods and value-added products, highlighting the important role women play in strengthening household and community resilience.

🌊 Supported through the Vanuatu Community-Based Climate Resilience Project (VCCRP), these initiatives demonstrated how communities are planning for and responding to climate risks while safeguarding livelihoods, culture and wellbeing.

🌺 Vinaka vakalevu and Tangkyu Tumas to the people of Nguna Island, Vanuatap Village for their warm hospitality and for generously sharing their experiences, knowledge and solutions. Their leadership offers valuable lessons for advancing community-centred climate action and resilience across the Pacific.

🤝 In coordination with the Government of Vanuatu, the exchange is facilitated by the UNDP Pacific Office and IOM Vanuatu under the joint programme Advancing Durable Solutions to Internal Displacement in Vanuatu, funded by the Internal Displacement Solutions Fund (IDSF).

Strengthening Displacement and Evacuation Centre Management in Vanuatu 🇻🇺

As part of the Sef Ples Blong Yumi Phase II Project, IOM in collaboration with NDMO, Provincial and Area Council authorities, continues to strengthen Displacement and Evacuation Centre Management (DECM) at provincial and community levels.

During August, Evacuation Centre Management trainings were conducted across Sanma and Malampa Provinces, bringing together Provincial and Area Council representatives to strengthen their knowledge, coordination, and preparedness for effective evacuation centre management during emergencies and disasters.

These trainings support the establishment of stronger Provincial and Area Council DECM structures while building the capacity of local authorities and communities to better prepare for, coordinate, and manage evacuations during disasters.

Through continued financial support from the Government of Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the project team including National Disaster Management Office, IOM, Provincial Governments, Area Councils and communities, are working towards building capacity so that communities across Vanuatu are safer, more prepared, and more resilient to disasters.
