When we look at the official badge of the Fiji Police Force, we see the sacred words Salus Populi (SAH loos PO poo lee). Mr. Speaker, Sir, these words simply mean the welfare of the people. This must be our true guide for everything we do in this House. It is the real measure of our security and our success.

โIt is our sincere hope that the agreements made at the inaugural Pacific Transnational Crime Summit summit will result in adequate resources and proper tools being given directly to our frontline workers,โ Mr Lal said.
โOur local police stations need better vehicles, better maritime surveillance equipment to watch the sea, and proper gear to do their jobs safely.โ

Opposition Member of Parliament Virendra Lal has urged police leadership to act decisively against rogue elements within the force to restore eroding public trust.
Replying to a ministerial statement yesterday, Mr Lal acknowledged that public confidence in the Fiji Police Force is currently facing significant hurdles, adding that these challenges are openly discussed across communities.
However, he strongly defended the integrity of the wider institution, stating that the prevailing negative perception unfairly shadows the vast majority of hard-working personnel.

Through the self-assessment process, the Fiji Parliament continues to strengthen its contribution to the SDGs by promoting good governance, meaningful oversight, and policies that serve communities across Fiji.

I joined members of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence in meeting with Inter-Parliamentary Union experts Dr Ashley Clements and Jean-Raphael Guiluani as part of the IPU SDGs Self-Assessment for the Fiji Parliament.
The engagement provided an important opportunity to reflect on Parliamentโs role in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals and strengthening the way national priorities are aligned with people-centred development outcomes. Hon. Lal acknowledged the value of constructive dialogue, institutional learning, and international parliamentary cooperation in advancing Fijiโs commitment to sustainable, inclusive, and accountable development.

Suva, Fiji โ In response to the recent Ministerial Statement on the Family Assistance Scheme (FAS), I want to reiterate our fundamental belief that government support must extend to all struggling Fijian families, not just a select few.
While we acknowledge efforts to strengthen the FAS, I cannot support a system that, under the guise of "modernisation," overlooks the plight of our hardworking middle-income families. These are the thousands of Fijians in the 11th and 12th percentiles who, despite their efforts, are still grappling with economic hardship. They are falling through the cracks, and it is our duty to ensure they are caught.
As I stated in Parliament, the safety net must be wide enough to protect everyone who is falling. A truly compassionate government looks at the person, not just the spreadsheet. We must move beyond narrow targeting and embrace an inclusive approach that recognizes the dynamic nature of poverty and vulnerability.
Our focus should always be on the well-being of every Fijian. Let us work together to build a social protection system that genuinely leaves no one behind.
