We have always said we do Scouting like no where else, our group particularly and our District face challenges not on the same scale as others. We need ongoing support in order to survive. The support we recieve from friends, parents, and our District is exceptional. We are truly part of the wider Upper Ardoyne Community. With the closure of Immanuel our time at the Hall will come to an end in the near future and the group will not have a home in Upper Ardoyne, a place we have operated in for over 80 years. Our Group Lead, Scott Clifford, is working tirelessly with others to find us a new home in the area, if we can't find one we will have to relocate on a permanent basis...if anyone can help/support in identifying new premises we would be very grateful! The leadership team will keep the 45th going in our District Hall in the hope we will return to the area in the very near future! Our young people are the best about and we wouldn't do Scouting anywhere else!⚜️
The Scout Association’s Medal for Meritorious Conduct, presented to West Belfast District Scout Council in 1972. This award recognised and acknowledged the District’s work in continuing to deliver Scouting across north/west Belfast during ‘the Troubles’.
This was a tremendous accolade, recognising the many dedicated and committed Scouters, across the District, who ensured that good Scouting continued in the most challenging of times.
That work continues today. The District may have reduced in size, but the hugely important work which our dedicated leaders do is as much needed today as it has ever been.
Our District may be small in number, but it is unparalleled across the United Kingdom, operating in the most difficult and challenging of circumstances. With Groups based in Ardoyne, Woodvale, Glencairn and Ballygomartin, the work which the 45th, 20th, 50th and 77th Groups do, supported by the District, is amazing.
Scouting is increasingly seen as a middle-class organisation. That most certainly is not the case in North West Belfast. We operate in some of the most socially challenged, economically deprived and fractured wards, not just in Northern Ireland, but across our United Kingdom.
It is to the credit of many stalwarts, down through the decades, that Scouting in north Belfast and Greater Shankill has survived.
However, today the challenges have never been greater and the resilience of Leaders never more tested. Indeed, if Scouting is to survive, never mind develop in Greater Shankill, those in authority need to more and support our Groups and Leaders on the ground. We see significant finance and resource pumped into the area, but uniformed organisations, all of which have declined, particularly in the last decade, are ignored and taken for granted.
NB. The Medal is on permanent display in the District Headquarters at the 48th Hall. ⚜️
