The Government has today provided an update on its review of Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) decisions in a number of areas across the country.

While decisions have been announced to progress for some areas, Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland has been advised the Government has withdrawn its July 2026 decision to create two new unitary councils by April 2028, one covering a larger city and another for the rest of Leicestershire and Rutland.

The Government remains committed to the LGR process and have set out that further LGR decisions will be forthcoming.

Today’s update means that council services will continue as normal and there is no need for residents, businesses or community groups to do anything. We now await further detail and will provide updates as information becomes available.

Local council elections are still planned for 6 May 2027.

♻️ Getting rid of household waste? Know your responsibilities.

We've put up new signs at the Coalville and Lount Household Waste and Recycling Sites to remind people about their responsibilities when disposing of extra waste.

🚛 Only give your waste to an authorised waste carrier who holds an upper-tier waste carrier licence
✅ Check they are legitimate before handing over your waste. To check, visit nwleics.gov.uk/wastepermit
⚠️ If you give your waste to an unlicensed carrier and it is later fly-tipped, you could be fined.

We are working with councils across Leicestershire to help reduce fly-tipping and raise awareness of householders' responsibilities.

Check before it's taken away.

This year's Poppy Appeal was launched by the Royal British Legion at the War Memorial in Coalville at 11am on Saturday 24 October.

If you're visiting Coalville, look out for two displays comprising over 8,000 knitted and crocheted poppies on Memorial Square in Coalville, and at Coalville Library.

The poppies have been donated by people from across the district, as well as local school children, as part of our Project Poppy campaign.

North West Leicestershire will remember and reflect on the sacrifices of fallen soldiers at a Remembrance Day service and parade in Coalville on Sunday 8 November.

To accommodate the parade along Hotel Street and High Street, a road closure will be in place on Sunday 8 November from 10am to 12pm. Road users are advised to plan ahead and use alternative routes during this time.

During the two-minute silence, poppy petals will be released from the top of the Memorial Clock Tower to honour of those who served and currently serve in the armed forces.

In the coming weeks communities across North West Leicestershire will come together to honour and remember the service and sacrifice of those who have served our country.

• Saturday 24 October | Poppy Appeal launched by the Royal British Legion at the Memorial Clock Tower in Coalville

• Sunday 8 November | Remembrance Day Parade and Service in Coalville, including the two-minute silence and wreath-laying ceremony at the Memorial Clock Tower

• Wednesday 11 November, 11am | Armistice Day Service at the Memorial Clock Tower in Coalville.

A huge thank you to everyone who has helped create more than 8,000 knitted and crocheted poppies for our displays at the clock tower and Coalville Library.

Special thanks to children from:

• Swannington C of E Primary School
• 5th Coalville Guides
• Snarestone Primary School
• Woodstone Primary School
• Marlborough Day Nursery
• Forest Way School
• Griffydam Primary School.

Councillor Tony Gillard, the council’s Armed Forces Champion, said:

“Remembrance Day is a chance to stop and reflect on the sacrifices made by those we have lost, and to show our gratitude to members of our armed forces who are currently serving in conflicts across the globe.

“Our Coalville Remembrance parade is always very well support by the public, and I am sure we will see a great turnout again this year.

“I’d also like to offer my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has donated handmade poppies for our displays. The response has been incredible.”
