Remembering Our Roots, Celebrating Our History 💜

This powerful story highlights the courage and determination of the women who, in October 1976, took action to support survivors of domestic and sexual violence by establishing a refuge at 24 Pump Street. Their vision, commitment, and activism laid the foundations for the services and support that so many women and children rely on today.

As Marie Brown, CEO of Foyle Women's Aid, reflects, it was those pioneering women who led the way, helping to spark the women's movement not only in Derry but across the North.

We are proud to honour the legacy of pioneers such as Avila Kilmurray, the late Cathy Harkin, and all those who stood together to create change. Their courage continues to inspire our work every day.

💜

Over eleven days in October 1976 local women – including community activists Avila Kilmurray and the late Cathy Harkin – established a squat at 24 Pump Street for women survivors of domestic violence and sexual violence. Fifty years later Foyle Women's Aid CEO Marie Brown reflects: “It's on those first women that we have built anything that we have done since then. They really led the way and we have built everything from their actions. It was so important. It was the beginning of the women's movement, not just in Derry but across the North.”
