Some spooky figures now the nights have pulled in; a couple of roe deer barely visible coming out to graze in front of the reception hide to the accompaniment of good numbers of pink footed geese roosting on the D reservoir tonight.

Stonchats, redwing, curlew, redshank all present in recent days

Great to welcome Sheffield RSPB group to the reserve today - a bit cool so time to fire up the log burner again for the first time this season.

Also on the cool breeze were a fair number of redwing, another four whoopers, skeins of pink feet - and a little bit of summer with a chiffchaff.

We’re all back open again! But you may not recognise us with a new road 😊 A vast improvement on what was, we’ve laid 1.5km of fresh tarmac all the way down the access road and eliminated all those pot holes at last. In addition we have a new ticket machine too - all cashless now. Membership cards are now contactless rather than swipe and your existing membership has the chip ready to go.

Recent days have seen up to 4 red crested pochard on D res, several parties of whooper swans and, black tailed godwit and 100 golden plover. But some north easterlies on the cards and lets see what arrives in coming days

Some great work from a small group of our usual Kingsmill team today. They helped load up wetland plants for JSR at Southburn that will be used to improve their wetland habitat. Then we planted some Ragged robin plants on the edges of reception pond. Students showed great commitment to clean tools and wash out pots, making sure their task was complete. Fabulous effort today 😊
Sightings - 3 male Red crested pochard right in front of reception hide this morning 😍

Work on the resurfacing of the road to the reserve is going well with tarmac laying commencing tomorrow. Due to the tight final approach to the nature reserve our contractors have requested no visits to site on Friday the 9th and Monday the 12th of October barring residents and essential staff. Likewise if you can avoid visiting during weekdays from Tuesday the 13th to Friday the 16th of October it will help our contractors deliver the best result and avoid visitor delay. Foot access is still possible but please do not impede roads or work areas with parked vehicles.

Normal operating hours on the weekend of the 10th and 11th, and from the 17th onwards will apply.

Our apologies for the disruption; It is heartening to see the scale and thoroughness of work being done, and the end result will be a vast improvement.

More glamorous than scraping verges off ready for tomorrow’s tarmacing by the core volunteer team was the visit by East Yorkshire Bat Group today. Highlights included finding 3 of our uncommon nathusius’s pipistrelles. They’re associated with woodlands next to large water bodies and have been present on the reserve for around 20 years; We suspected that we may have been one of the first breeding sites in the UK for the species, but alas we never located the likely maternity roost and have still yet to.

Our third ever Clifden nonpareil moth today - and the first at a moth light, after this free flying one found by John and Miki Foster last month. Associated with wet woodlands they have always been a scarce visitor to the uk but becoming more numerous now. Black rustic and yellowtail moth nice finds too.

Lots of pink footed geese around the reserve today at altitude. Whilst fleeting kingfisher and a lone ruff the wider bird highlights.

A reminder again resurfacing work starts on Monday.

If you visited the reserve today you’ll have noticed the fang of volunteers working really hard to clear the road edges before the resurfacing work commences next week. Thanks to all who helped out and to our Kingsmill pupils working nearer the reserve entrance. When asked which tool they preferred to use, brushing was preferred. Be careful what you wish for folks 😂😂……
Thanks also to our hide cleaners keeping on top of the many hides across the reserve which are the favourite haunt of some very large spiders 🕷️!!
With a bit of drizzle this afternoon a handful of pied wagtails as well as a Wheatear dropped in to feed off the insects on D res wall. Maybe worth a look on the marshes tomorrow if the weather conditions persist overnight 🤞
**please note the reserve is OPEN next week despite the roadworks **
