Clandon Wood Beautiful, award winning nature reserve & natural burial ground - a cemetery for our time. In fact on arriving you would not guess it is a cemetery.

A funeral you will want to remember in a place you won't want to forget. A perfect place to be – guided by nature

Clandon Wood is a nature reserve as well as a final resting place for our loved ones. With thirty-one acres of traditional wildflower meadowland, lakes, wetland and young woodland inhabited by a wide and diverse range of flora and fauna our national award winning naturally managed burial ground provides the perfect final resting place for you or a loved one whatever faith, belief or thinking. Core to the thinking behind Clandon Wood is the creation of a place of nature, beauty and openness where those left behind will want to come and spend time to reflect and remember for generations to come. Our professionally qualified personnel with expertise in conservation and arboriculture manage the grounds to complement the farmland and woodlands around us to the benefit of local wildlife. Although most of the site is meadowland our newly planted trees blend the woodlands and grasslands of the neighbourhood together making us a large glade within a wood. Our 21 acre glade is managed as a wildflower meadow rich in nectar, seed sources and “hidey holes” for wildlife as diverse as the smallest mining bees to badgers in a rich patchwork of habitats. We have created two wildlife ponds full of dragonflies that now hunt the insects feeding on the flowers and grasses which are in turn fed upon by hobbies and other birds. In a landscape increasingly barren to wildlife our dedicated ground-staff works to support biodiversity from the ground up. In fact the only way to really appreciate what we have to offer at Clandon Wood is to experience it first-hand. So come and see Clandon Wood for yourself – whether to visit our nature reserve or if you are thinking about choosing a plot, you will always be welcome.

🍂 November Highlights at Clandon Wood 🍂

The cooler, wetter weather has arrived, and the summer heat and drought already feel like a distant memory. November brings its own beautiful changes to Clandon Wood, with autumn colours, seasonal wildlife and plenty to discover.

Here are a few things to look out for on your next visit:

🦆 Life on the Pond
Keep an eye out for coots, moorhens and visiting winter ducks finding shelter amongst the reeds.

🌼 In the Meadows
You may still spot some late-season flowers, including toadflax, field scabious and lesser knapweed. The recent rain has also encouraged a wonderful variety of fungi, including puffballs, yellow fieldcaps and chicken of the woods.

🍒 Hedgerows & Woodlands
Our native hedgerows are full of food for wildlife, with hawthorn, dogwood, spindle, rosehips and mistletoe berries, alongside beech mast and acorns. Look out for Old Man's Beard (wild clematis), whose fluffy seed heads look rather like nature's own Christmas decorations!

🐦 Birdlife & Mammals
As winter approaches, look out for flocks of fieldfares and redwings arriving to feed on fallen seeds and berries. Pheasants and red-legged partridges are also busy foraging in the meadows.

You might spot kestrels and red kites hunting over the open grassland, while mice and voles make their homes amongst the tussocky meadow grasses. Look carefully and you may notice their tiny pathways and entrance holes.

And if you're lucky, turning over a fallen log may reveal a newt sheltering for the winter.

November is a wonderful reminder that there is always something happening in nature, even as the seasons change.

🍃 Which one do you think this is, and why?

Look closely at the leaves and see if you can spot the clues that help you tell them apart.

🚫 Try not to use Google Lens or similar — let’s see who can identify it using their own nature knowledge!

🍁 **Cherry red… but not quite that hot!** 🍒

Our Japanese Sargent’s cherry (*Prunus sargentii*) at Clandon Wood is putting on a spectacular autumn display, with its leaves glowing in shades of orange, red and bronze.

But here’s a fun comparison: did you know that cast iron heated to around **795–900°C** can glow cherry red? Thankfully, our beautiful cherry tree achieves its fiery autumn colours without needing anything quite so extreme!

The rich colours are part of the tree’s natural seasonal changes as it prepares for winter, giving us a wonderful display before its leaves fall.

Have you spotted our Japanese Sargent’s cherry showing off its autumn colours? 🍂

🍃 **A little bit of leaf drama at Clandon Wood!** 🍃

Have you spotted this white, powdery coating on a leaf? It looks as though nature has dusted it with icing sugar! But this is likely to be **powdery mildew**, a group of fungi commonly found on plants, particularly as the seasons change.

🔬 Powdery mildew is made up of tiny fungal threads that grow across the surface of a leaf, giving it that distinctive white, dusty appearance.

🍂 Unlike many fungi, powdery mildew doesn’t usually need a film of water on the leaf to thrive. Some types actually favour humid conditions with relatively dry leaf surfaces.

🐞 It’s not all bad news for nature! Although mildew can weaken affected plants, it is part of the complex web of life in our natural environment, where fungi play an important role.

🌿 Nature’s very own s**g pile rug! 🌿

Take a closer look at this moss growing on one of our natural benches. Doesn’t it look just like the fibres of a soft, fluffy rug? You almost expect to run your fingers through it!

But this little patch of green is much more than just a pretty face. Did you know?

🍃 Mosses have no true roots. Instead, they use tiny structures to anchor themselves to surfaces such as bark, rocks and soil.

💧 They’re brilliant at holding water. Moss can soak up and retain moisture, helping to create a damp microhabitat for tiny creatures.

🐜 They’re miniature wildlife havens. Moss provides shelter for all sorts of small invertebrates, including springtails and tiny mites.

🌳 A fallen tree is far from dead in nature’s eyes! As the wood slowly breaks down, it becomes a valuable habitat for fungi, mosses, insects and other wildlife, returning nutrients to the soil.

Can you see the resemblance to a s**ggy rug, or is it just us?

🌼 A little spring magic in the making at Clandon Wood! 🌼

A huge thank you to our fantastic volunteer group, who have been busy planting bulbs all around the pavilion.

Thanks to their hard work, we’re hoping for a beautiful halo of golden daffodils surrounding the pavilion come spring! What a lovely sight that will be for everyone visiting us.

We’re incredibly grateful to our volunteers for the time, care and enthusiasm they bring to Clandon Wood, helping us make this special place even more beautiful for people and wildlife alike.

We can’t wait to see the results when spring arrives!

Tea, Cake & Company

Sunday 25th October 2026 from 11:30 - 2:30

Come and join us in our glass pavilion for a cup of tea or coffee and some cake.

Open to anyone who has been bereaved, the Clandon Wood Drop-In Days offer a chance to be among others who share the experience of loss.

Talking helps. Having a space where death is not a taboo subject is important, and knowing that others who have experienced something similar are there to support you can be a relief.

George, Ailean and Marion host these special Sundays, along with our very helpful volunteers, Gary and Michael. Although we won’t be offering professional bereavement support, we believe that kindness, company and a listening ear are sometimes all that is needed.

We look forward to seeing you.

Could we politely ask that you don’t arrive before 11:30, please, to allow us enough time to get everything set up and ready for serving. Thank you.
