What a day! 🥖 We had an absolute blast at our Bread Making Experience Day this week at Heckington Windmill!

From learning the secrets of the perfect rise to mastering the art of the knead, our bread bakers brought incredible energy (and some seriously impressive skills) to the mill.

The best part? Every single loaf was baked using our very own flour, milled right here on-site. You truly can't get any fresher than that! 🌾✨

Here is what made the day so special:

• Milling to Mixing: Learning about the journey of the grain from the windmill straight to the mixing bowl.
• Hands-on Crafting: Watching everyone perfect their techniques, from classic loaves to artisanal shapes.
• Freshly Baked Goodness: There is truly nothing quite like the unbeatable warmth and comforting aroma of bread fresh out of the oven!

A massive thank you to everyone who joined us, rolled up their sleeves, and made the day such a wonderful success. You all went home with some beautiful, delicious bakes!

👉 Missed out on this one? Don't worry! If you want to learn how to bake your own artisan bread using traditional windmill flour, keep a close eye on our page. We will be announcing our next workshop dates very soon!

Huge thanks to those that visited this morning and bought freshly baked bread, flour and sourdough starters. We have sold out of our bread for today but the Windmill is still open for anyone that wants to buy some of our lovely flour and have a go at baking bread at home and, of course, the tea room is still serving delicious food and refreshments this afternoon 🍰 ☕

We would just like to give a shout-out to our volunteer bakers who start baking at 6am on our bread baking days to bring you these delicious loaves 🍞🌾

🚀 What a spectacular turn-out for our Harvest Family Fun Day! A massive thank you to everyone who spent their Sunday with us at the mill. The energy was incredible—from the rumble of the vintage tractors and stationary engines to the beautiful heavy horses and rare breed sheep. We loved seeing so many families exploring the mill on our guided tours, trying their luck at the tombola, learning about milling techniques and machinery from our millers and engineers and watching traditional flour milling in action!

🌾A huge shout out to all our incredible volunteer teams, and the Tea Room, and 8 Sail Brewery for keeping everyone fueled with fresh cakes, bakes, lunches and refreshments all day long! 🍰🍺

Bring history to life for the next generation! 🎒🌾

We are looking for enthusiastic people to join our volunteer education team and help shape unforgettable learning experiences for visiting schools. Last year, over 500 schoolchildren visited Heckington Windmill to discover the science and history behind our unique 8 Sail mill—and you can be the spark that inspires them! You don't need to be a history expert or a teacher. If you enjoy working with young people, sharing local heritage, and want to support interactive learning, we would love to hear from you!

How you can help build young minds:

Guide interactive tours through the layers of the windmill's fascinating 1830s engineering. Assist with hands-on workshops that teach children how we mill flour from locally grown wheat and help youngsters experience the magic of baking their very own bread from scratch! Share your time flexibly—you can give as much or as little time as your schedule allows!

Help us make their next school trip memorable.

📧 Contact us at [email protected] to enquire about joining our education team today!
