The government is expected to decide on the future of councils in West Sussex between now and early 2027, with any new councils due to take over services in April 2029.

Current proposals would replace the existing county and district or borough council system with unitary councils, each responsible for all council services in its area.

The updated timetable follows discussions with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. Although no final decision has been made on the future council structure for West Sussex, a decision is expected to be based on the proposals that residents and local authorities have already been consulted on.

Horsham District Council elections will take place in May 2027 using existing boundaries. Elections to any new councils (Shadow Authority elections) would follow in May 2028, giving new authorities time to prepare before taking over services in April 2029.

Cllr Martin Boffey, Leader of Horsham District Council, said:

“Although this revised timetable gives councils more time, it also means a longer period of uncertainty for residents, staff and local authorities across West Sussex."

We were delighted to welcome over 50 business leaders and decision-makers to our second Horsham District Business Leaders Forum this October!

Hosted at the beautiful Leonardslee W**e Estate in Mannings Heath, the event included inspiring insights from keynote speaker Jo Fairley, co-founder of Green & Black’s Chocolate, and thought-provoking discussions during the event’s panel sessions.

Facilitated by MC Tim Fifield, the panels featured expert speakers from London Gatwick Airport, Pentagon Plastics, Architectural Plants, Tottington Manor Hotel, Chef’s Farm and Eshcon Ltd.

Key focusses of the forum were the importance of creating resilient supply chains, sustainability as a growth strategy, and how investing in people - staff, suppliers and customers - lies at the heart of successful business.
There was also ample opportunity for networking amongst attendees to facilitate local collaboration.

The forums are organised by Horsham District Council's Enterprising Horsham team, in association with Gatwick Diamond Business.

So far this year, there have been 145 fires linked to batteries and electrical items recorded at West Sussex Recycling Centres, at our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Ford and at the Horsham Anaerobic Digestion and Resource Recovery Facility (ADRRF)!

We are reminding residents to keep batteries, vapes and electrical items out of your household bins.

If it has a plug, battery or cable, don’t bin it.

https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/land-waste-and-housing/waste-and-recycling/recycling-and-waste-prevention/recycling-news/stop-the-spark/

This is already happening in West Sussex.

So far this year, there have been 145 fires linked to batteries and electrical items recorded at West Sussex Recycling Centres, at our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) in Ford and at the Horsham Anaerobic Digestion and Resource Recovery Facility (ADRRF).

Across the UK, binned batteries, and electricals containing batteries, caused more than 1,200 fires over the last year.

Phones, vapes, power banks, electric toothbrushes, toys, and other battery powered items should not go in household recycling or waste bins.

When they are crushed or damaged during collection and processing, the batteries inside overheat, spark, and start fires.

These fires put collection crews, Recycling Centre staff, waste facility workers and firefighters at risk.

Their safety starts in your home, keep batteries, vapes and electrical items out of your household bins.

If it has a plug, battery or cable, don’t bin it.
